So I've been having a bit of an argument with a local Furd mechanic who claims that 6.7 Cummins trucks are popping head gaskets on a VERY regular basis. Apparently he is getting his info from local Ram techs.

Anybody had experience with a head gasket letting go? Stock or tuned truck? Babied or flogged on?

Just looking for a cross section of experiences here...

lets think about your source here....

Perhaps he's confusing the ford 6.7 with the cummins?

Probably not, Ive gotten the same thing from a couple of shops that treat 6.7 (rams) which dont have warranty. It was primarily due to the old crappy H&S box tunes or people kicking out MCC tunes that didnt know or didnt care what they were doing.

This "chat" is on a different forum Ive been on for a long time, and it was getting a bit heated... He's claiming these are trucks still under warranty, so all fairly new. I've never heard of it, and you KNOW that most people are on here only to complain or when they have an issue, so we would have heard about it plenty if it were the case...

Spoke with a local diesel performance shop and asked if the Ram 6.7 was having any issues. They said any that had blown a head gasket had been turned up and head studs would fix it. Other than that most issues are emissions related if they did not get it hot frequently. (Lugging too much or short trips without reaching running temps).

there are plenty of tuned 6.7s that have popped the head gasket. there are plenty of opinions as to why. alot of them point at the H&S tuning on their tuners (10-12 models). other opinions lean towards the variable geometry turbo making high drive pressure on tuned up engines. if you are overly curious, search "head gasket" in the 4th gen section and you will find plenty of hours worth of reading material. alot of guys, like myself, even have installed ARP head studs as sort of an "insurance" to ourselves, even though we have never popped the gasket. we just take 1 OEM head bolt out at a time and replace them with the ARP studs.

if you understand diesel engine tuning (injection duration vs injection timing vs drive pressure.......etc.......), read up on some of the threads on this forum. you will find alot of info leading towards H&S tuning on their tuners (10-12 models). H&S on 07-09 and EFI live on 07-15 models seem to be much less troublesome.

Don't tune them and they won't blow a HG. Sure there might be an isolated incident but for the most part this is gospel.

And don't tow 20k lbs up a massive grade right out of your driveway when its not up to operating temp! Warm up procedures are paramount in high boost applications.
