HE351cw question

I've got a 12 v, but was wondering how hard you guys have pushed your stock 351 before having to upgrade? ( 1 inch wastegates acceptable, but not concerned with upgraded or larger turbines.) Only concerned with daily drivers and towing applications, not compitation or off road.

Around 450HP for me. Maybe 475.
It was not modified and did run 43 psi and HOT. 1,800 plus after a five to six second run.

It's obviously way off it's map at 43psi but It ran stronger there than detuning on edge or smarty to 40psi. Box tunes though.

Daily driver. I couldn't imagine being able to tow at 450hp.
Thats the problem I'm having with my hx35 is temps being high. I'm only about 300hp, but I can hit 1300 within a single gear. (could go higher, but I dont allow it) If I get on it, I have to let it cool a little everytime I shift. I wonder how much enlarging the wastgate helps. Is there no such thing at a quick spool and low EGT's??
There is no turbo that can make 285 wheel HP (stocker) up to 1000HP without major sacrafices no.

What is your goal HP?
About 400 to 450 with a single. Then, maybe sometime down the road when my heads can take it, throw in a big primary in a twin setup to get me around the 550hp. But then still, I have the most heavyduty street clutch, and it will only get me to 650. I never really "race" my truck. I do like to have a little fun sometimes and get to the speed limit asap. So basiclly, just around the mid 450 mark for now
With proper tuning stock injectors have bounced near 600hp.
Same with lift pump and CP3 in really good condition.
Your heads should be fine to 50psi.

Trans first
then gauges.
sounds like you have both.
It won't hurt to drill out the wastegate but I don't know how much it will help.
People laugh at 1400 in short bursts smart or not. I do 1550 all the time (daily).
Factory everything will reach 1400 easy and they don't have gauges.

Then air before fuel. You could save for a tow twin turbo setup or a stocker 475 kit.
You will drastically lower EGT's and gain power. You could use the tune to control max boost and be great in the 450-550hp range. Then add more later if you want

Well thank you Wayward. I appriciate your 2 cents. I've already bought the 351, I just havn't had time to get it in yet. I was just wondering what to expect. I havn't fueled too aggressively yet, as it is extreemly hard to get ANY smoke out my tailpipe. I had it tuned at a place called Jefferson State Diesel before I added the BHAF and MBRP exhaust, so I could probably give it a little more fuel now, I'm just kinda waiting until I finish installing the 351cw. If temps start getting too high, maybe adding the twin and tuning down to the 450 mark wouldn't be such a bad idea. I would have just stuck with the hx35 and went twin from there, but I love the idea of starting to light the turbo at around 1250 instead of 1750ish. Thanks for all the addition info with the injectors, heads, ect. I'm trying to suck up all the knowledge I can!! Thumbs up to you!!!

HE351 will move a lot more air than an HX35 and do better quality air at lower pressures. They spool because the hot side is tight, effectively what a 12cm turbo is with a lot bigger comp wheel. DP is its downfall though.

By the time you hit 40 psi it is out of its effective map but as long as the DP doesn't get too bad it will still deliver decent air.

The BB Garrets are probably the best in the under 550 HP range for spool and DP. Other than that, compounds.

Yes, I've been following a thread on comp D where the op took the 351cw stock 65/58 turbine and replaced it with the super hx40 76/64 and got DP down to almost 1:1. (had wastegate ported to max as well) I believe at 42# boost, he was just under 48#'s DP. No machining required on the inducer side, but the exducer side was extreemly close and left the medal extreemly thin for my taste. There is a few turbines in the middle as well from BAE (70/60 and a 70/64) Just not sure if the cost will justify the means. I did buy the 351 with plans on using it in the future with a compound setup, but if it wont be a good option, I can always flip it when ready. Havn't heard anything about Garrets. ( still new to the turbo diesel world) Still in my learning curve.
I'm in the exact same boat, or in this case, truck. Plan on cleaning up the exhaust housing on the 351cw and porting the wastegate before putting it on. With it apart, I noticed that there are 2 turbine blade that have a small (.75mm) 'dip' in the inducer part. both these are next to each other. Is this a problem? being such a small difference is the turbine wheel shot? If so, I think I might try the 70/60 turbine wheel. any thoughts?
