Ok so i just talked to a grumpy old guy, who says he has been building 5.9 12v's and 8.3's for sled puller's in the mid west since the early 90's and before.

I actually called him to ask his shop to O-ring my head. He said that is a waste of time, and that the only way to do it is to o-ring the block.

Then he told me that I was just damaging my pump having a zero plate and stock "pop it valves" (Delivery Valves) because because the valves can't flow enough and it just builds tons of pressure in the pump cylinder and it can't get out. And also said that I wasn't running nearly enough timing.

He claims to have a 96 that runs 11. something 1/4 don't remember exact, on 85 lbs of boost and a stock head gasket and stock head bolts. He said that the stock will hold as long as you have the truck set up right aka pump set up right, right DV's, right timing for your setup.

what do you think????? He was really knowledgeable, seemed to know everything i do, and a lot more, so i don't really have any reason to not believe him.

well last time I check the stocked head gasket was rated for 45psi max! I hit 60 psi a few times and was ok then one time and there she went.

From what I understand the reason you oring the head is so it will handle more boost, doesnt seem right to me. Buy hey im a dumb kid....LOL

i ran into a similar problem when i straight piped my truck.
called a local mom and pop guy, and he was all about NOT doing it
for some of the dumbest reasons.

he said he wouldnt do it and hung up.
you could tell he was an old fart and thought he knew
every damn thing.

Well I guess you'll never really know unless you try right?

Just to make sure, is blowing your head gasket very bad for the engine?? Im thinking about bumping the timing farther up to 20* here and seeing if it pops...

if you retorque your head bolts in a certain procedures of tighting them down, i type it but its to long, torqueing them down to 150lbs. for turbos pusing more than 45psi. this is what i was told

Whether studs are a benefit or not is a debated topic. Like stated a careful torque procedure helps a lot. I think the idea is 30,60,90,120,125,130,135, etc to the desired torque in 5lb increments with a good torque wrench and well lubed bolts. And retorque and retorque again.

I agree. Sounds like you got ahold of some old fart that probably has an old 6.9 IDI Ford and thinks it has a p-pump on it. Just kidding. I was talking to Gus the other day and he said that as long as you have 2 perfectly flat surfaces going back together, you CAN use a stock head gasket and head bolts. Said that he had one that was holding 80+ psi. I believe him because he is VERY familiar with the ole Cummins.

Wow, this is interesting, do you guys REALLY think this can be done?!?! I have everything for twins but been waiting to do the head. Are you guys talking about a new headgasket and bolts, or just retorqueing the existing ones, cause if thats the case ill try and do it this weekend?

I looked into it a while ago... i was going to just get a new head gasket and head bolts, since they are relatively cheep and my truck is so old with so many miles on it.

The procedure i had heard about a while back was:
Remove all the bolts, blow out good with compressed air, use moly based lube on the bolt threads and on top on both sides of the washer. Use the factory head torquing procedure. Then using the same torque pattern take each bolt up 5 ft-lbs at a time until you get up to 120-140 ft-lbs depending on how brave you are. This is supposed to hold the extra boost. haven't tried it though.

Well, now that I'm home for the summer (Canby, OR) I work only a few blocks from my house. So if the truck was out of commission for a bit it wouldn't be too big of a deal.
I think im going to have to try it :thumbsup have to wait till my first pay check though, so its going to be another week or two. I'll keep ya posted
