I have an issue with my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 with 48RE transmission and 72000 miles. The truck starts just fine but the shift from 1st to 2nd either stalls, causing the RPMs to rev high until I let off the pedal, and eventually shifts to 2nd or sometimes shifts between 1st and 2nd repeatedly before settling in 2nd. These shifting issues are random, sometimes it does it and sometimes not. This started about 1000 miles ago shortly after changing the fluid and adding the double deep transmission pan.

Based on some of the posts I read I was sure it was the governor solenoid. I contacted Suncoast and they said they think it is my Valve Body and not the solenoid. They recommended a new DC487 Valve Body which includes the GM style governor solenoid. They also said that I can try the solenoid and if it does not work they will deduct the price of the solenoid from the Valve Body

I am debating whether to get the Valve body or just solenoid. I figure I’m already dropping the pan, might as well do all I can before closing it up again and hopefully not do anything for awhile.

Has anyone had any experiences with the Suncoast DC487 Valve Body?

Even if the solenoid fixes my shifting issue what will I see difference with the DC487 Valve Body over the stock one?

Is a new valve body with the GM style solenoid worth the almost $700 cost?

One last question, the manual recommends adjusting the bands at 100,000 mi. Any issue with adjusting them when I drop the pan to either install the solenoid or VB?

Thanks in advance,
D

I am not familiar with their VB but a VB upgrade is a good idea for these transmissions whether you have a shift kit installed or a special valve body is debatable. The Band adjustment is pretty straight forward, do a search on here it is all spelled out, you will need a inch pound torque wrench

Could also be the governor pressure sensor. DTT builds a good VB as well

I would recommend going here Performance 46RE 47RE 48RE Transmissions Performance 46RE 47RE 48RE Parts

and finding the shift kit and all of the parts that go on your valve body and get them all installed. I would also suggest the billet 1-2 accumulator & 3-4 accumulator spring. These 2 mods helped my tranny nicely. Did not fix what I was after but I certainly noticed the difference in shifting. I think this may be a better way to build your VB & save some $ while your at it. My next step in trying to fix mine is the bore plugs and any sonax part that deals with the 1-2 shift. I may even go all the way and get all of the rest of the parts and toss them all at it.

Do you guys think a new valve body will harm the stock trans at all, or cause it to have new problems?

Personally I suggest DTT. They also do valve bodies as well as the solenoid and shift enhanser. If you are capable DTT will sell you the kit to modify your own valve body and it will save you some $$. Call Stefan and he will be able to tell you exactly what you need, and he won't try to over sell you on stuff you don't need. The valve body will not cause you any other problems, and you will like the way it shifts better.
