So I got a 191s, 4k springs, 5x16s coming and I'm wondering what you guys would recommend running for a turbo? It's gonna be a DD and 2.5 pulling truck so it can't be to big. i was gonna buy a cheap HX40 to see if i like it and spend the money and get an actual Holset HX40 or go with something else. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Ditch the 60lb valve spring and go get the 165lb with keepers and locks and nothing mentioned studs

I guess it would depend on the general level of 2.5 trucks around your area, and just how competitive you want to be. Honestly I think you need to do some more research into 2.5 pulling trucks and see how far you want to go.

Just putting some big injectors and an hx40 on your truck won't cut it in a real 2.5 class. An stock hx40 is not even a 2.5 turbo.

I'm not trying to sound harsh, just truthful.

ya i know it wont cut it but funding 2 pulling trucks is really expensive. my dmax is on its way to be a 2.6 truck. this is my 3rd 12 valve and my others were pretty much stock and i want this one to go good and be some what competive. i mean obviously its not gonna win but still

No ill will intended at all man. Just that your first post talking about building a 2.5 puller and wanting to run an hx40 makes it sound like you're jumping in over your head. I just hate to see people go into things woefully unprepared and end up getting embarrassed or breaking their truck that's all.

As far as parts, I'd for sure stud it, and look into getting it o ringed. While the heads off do some backyard porting on it, every little bit helps.

Start with low to mid 20s for timing since you still want to drive it some on the street.

I'd probably run 5k gov springs instead of the 4s. They tend to fuel harder even under 4k.

You'll of course need a fuel system to feed the injectors and DVs too. Personally I think I'd build my own with an A1000 as opposed to buying something like a FASS or Airdog.

As for the turbo what are the rules you'll be following? Is this a 2.5 workstock so stock appearing or can you run something plainly aftermarket? Something like shegotmecummin suggested would work well for street driving and would make the class, but you'd get more power out of an S400 frame of course.

On a side not. I've read of the hx40 Chinese blowing up from normal driving. That makes me assume that with over fueling it that bad it would make it half way down the track. I'm not 100% sure on this but I'm just pointing it out.

ya i was talking to a couple of the people i go to the pulls with and they were saying that the tech dont really care about "stock appearing" as long as when the put the slug in it, it fits and aint to big.

I know area to area rules are different we can't have bushings or clipped wheels in northern Michigan. Always can do a bigger s400 with a spool flange for better street manners. Depends on how you like spool up on the street. For the price of an hx40 you can find a new box charger for not much more. For pulling s400 for street s300 but been hearing great things about the fmw s467.7.

Box stock S463. 63/83/.91 T4. Pretty cheap, makes good power, still pretty street drivable if you're not towing, and it meets the 2.5 inducer rule in stock form. Some places list it as a 64 but as far as I know it measures 63 so it passes.

I'm saying it measures at 63.3mm or something like that, some places list it for sale as a 64 though, and some list it as a 63. Most turbo wheels are not exactly the size that they're listed as. As far as I know the stock comp wheel does pass 2.5 tech though.
