I see. I prefer the NV5600 over the G56. Just a few reasons: The NV5600 iron nodular case is stronger than the G56 aluminum case, the NV5600 has a better OD ratio, the G56 DMF is a major problem. The NV5600 single mass flywheel is superior. Having said that, the NV5600 is on the more expensive side to maintain. Parts are getting harder to come by, as are competent shops to work on it.

I love my NV5600. With proper maintenance and care, it shifts very smooth and handles extensive power mods without issue. Adding a set of fast coolers is highly recommended.

No one re uses the DMF on a G56. Not even worth mentioning. The G56 was used for 13 years in these trucks. So there is infinitely more parts available for repair or upgrade.
My first truck in my sig has spent its entire life before I owned it hooked up to a fifth wheel.
Original transmission at 489000kms. Still shifts like new. My second truck has 384000kms original trans. It was a tow pig before I bought it and now it is my wife's welding truck.

True. I wasn't thinking in terms of a swap at that moment. Thanks.

The NV5600 shifts nicer IMO. But the G56 is fine once you have driven it for a while. My favorite trans to drive for a daily is still the NV4500.

What trans fluids have you used?

Currently running Amsoil 75w90 Syncromesh Oil. I have also used the Amsoil 5w30 Synchromesh with zero issues. 1qt over filled with Lucas Synthetic oil stabilizer.
Heavy abusive towing oil field and super bloody cold weather.

I don't know man, don't get me wrong I love my NV56 but I would never put the words shifts nice and nv5600 in the same sentence. Maybe its because mine has a dual disc and always has had a dual disc since I got the truck but there's no rushing that trans, maybe its just mine and my friends, He has the identical truck and his is the same way. Thing doesn't even like going into gear sitting still, I have to hold it there until it falls into gear. I assume its because of the heavy duty synchro's, and all the extra mass of the dual disc, but its unenjoyable for some who aren't used to it. Definitely wish I had a 48re when I wanna go fast and feel like a "racetruck". I cant speak for the g56 I know nothing about them. ZF-6 is the smoothest truck trans I ever operated.

It's been 10 years or so since I drove a truck with a 5600. You're probably right.

The NV5600 can shift smooth. Shifting fast is altogether different.

How often are you doing service intervals what fluid and cooler no cooler any additives or over fill?

Fluid change every 30K miles. I use Pennzoil Synchromesh, no additives. Single Fast Cooler, 7 quart top fill (6+1 for added fast cooler capacity).

Parts availability alone has me in the camp of never using an NV5600 again. I've moved on to G56's and they work real well, no concerns about getting OEM geartrain parts. But for a truck that wants to be a car, an NV5600 is probably still an okay choice. If you've already got one, I'd say your decision is made.
