I think if your starter is sticking on, it backfeeds current to your solenoid and can burn it up, maybe the wiring too.
You can wire in a diode kit to prevent that.

Fuel Shutdown solenoid problems
Hi guys
A few days ago I was driving my 1996 3500 on the freeway and it suddenly turned off. After taking a look in it, I found out that the problem was the fuel shutdown solenoid, it was not holding when pulled up, I took a look an the circuit, and in the holding part the green with black stripe wire that goes from the #9 fuse to the male harness conector was burnt, the fuse was also burnt, just this part was burnt, so I replaced the wire and the fuse, but it keeps burning the fuse, nothing else on the holding part of the circuit is wrong, also tested the solenoid outside the truck and it is fine.
Any ideas of what this could be?

Although the diode is a good thing to have, worn starter contacts keep the FSS engaged. LarryB's Fuel Solenoid Diode fits Dodge Cummins 12 valve, 94-1998.5
Did you check ALL the circuits? A blown fuse indicates a short in the wiring if the FSS tests out good.

Also, if you remove it, there is a tiny keyway (woodruff key) that keeps it in position. Its damn near impossible to buy one, you'll end up with a pack of 30....ask me how I know.

Yes, the rod on the bottom of the FSS, slides onto a shaft with the slot.
Shouldn't need to be removed.
