Just to be the devil's advocate but why shim or plug the rail?
I can see if you're having problems lifting the prv or plan on higher rail pressures but there's lots of deleted/tuned trucks out there without it being done.
I plugged my rail 4 years and 40,000 miles ago. I bought one of the first BlackMaxx programmers and H&S said I should shim or plug my rail... plugging it seemed like the easiest method.

.
Shim it and be done.
Why do you say to shim it? Is there a benefit to shiming instead of plugging?
For me it was MUCH easier to just pull the stocker and replace with the H&S plug. Took maybe 20 minutes at the most.
Why do you say shim?
Thanks

.
Ok, cool.
Thanks

.
I put a shim in mine and haven't had any issues.
I haven't had a shim or plug since deletes and have no problems.
Someone please explain why you would have to do that
I have a brand new shim kit I will give you

Someone please explain why you would have to do that
Description:"The Shim Kit effectively alters the spring tension of the pressure relief valve (PRV) by increasing its “pop off” pressure and reducing the fuel flow through the fuel rail return system. Eliminates low fuel rail pressure DTC codes P1093 or P0087 (low fuel rail pressure during power enrichment) caused by insufficient spring tension. Helps maintain available fuel rail pressure during full-throttle driving. Recommended for both performance or race applications."

Is this something I should be looking at doing.? Running the 100hp tune.
^yes,

If you are not throwing rail psi codes or that I would say you are fine but its not going to hurt. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/6-7l-tech-articles/103913-video-mp8-shimming-6-7l-fuel-valve.html

Nope no codes or anything. I will look into doing it at some point...maybe when its warm out again...lol
IIRC, the PRV is designed to pop ~23000psi rail pressure. Shimming/plugging it will get you to 25-26000psi. I believe the rail is rated to 29000psi. This is all under hard throttle conditions. More pressure = increased fuel atomization = power/efficiency of combustion.

It's been a few years since I've played with rail pressures so my numbers may be a little off. That's just what I remember off the top of my head.
I plugged mine because it was popping. Custom tuning played a part in that. If you shim or plug it make sure you have a rail pressure gauge so you can watch it.
