I have a Ram 2500 diesel with 170,000 miles. It is smoking REALLY bad and lousy mileage. It has been diagnosed by the Dodge dealer as having two bad fuel injectors. They said they will ONLY replace ALL the fuel injectors, not just the two that are bad.
Does this sound correct? At $650 a piece plus another $1100 for labor, it is going to cost $5000. Is there a problem with just replacing the fuel injectors that are bad?

it may save you headache later on when the other 4 go south one at a time and you are left in a similar boat paying labor out of pocket potentially 4 more times. Injectors from Bosch or Cummins should be less than $350 a piece, so go there first before you let them gig you for 650 a piece :thud:

DIY instructions easy to do. or take it to a local pickup truck shop that specializes in Cummins diesels and have them do the work. buy the injectors yourself and save the markup. most small private shops are so hungry for business they'll forgo the injector sales markup
you only want the upgraded Bosch new stainless steel injectors with nozzles.

dealer is the last resort place to have injectors replaced. they only have access to used socalled rebuilt Bosch, lots of problems. plus way overpriced.

Dealers perfer to replace all 6 and will recomend that, personally I feal its "better" to replace all 6. I was in the same boat as you, I had a smoke issue, bad mpg and the truck was running rough. I went to the dealer, becasue they have a good tech and there isnt a good local diesel shop. They can a kill test, balance test, compression test, did a reflash and said that 2 injectors were bad. The tech told me that if it was his truck he would only do 2, becasue the other 4 were fine. I dont have alot of cash, and I replaced just the two that were bad total bill with tax was $1650 with a 1 yr unlimited miliage warenty. If I had $4000 plus I would have done all 6, but with only replacing two, my truck runs fine. The tech told me that he usually replaces only the bad injectors unless a customer wants them all done. Sounds to me like your dealer is trying to screw you.

That price is a rip-off. We just had 4 replaced for just under $300/injector + $300 for labor. Thank goodness they say to replace all of them. We had only 4 replaced from our local dealership. We gave up on them b/c they were not fixing the problem - only making patches that ended up costing us $4000. It took a "Dodge Only Repair Shop" to finally fix the problem. They found that the dealership had only replace 2 of the 4 with Dodge Injectors. The other 2 were some other brand that had been rebuilt but were charged at dealership prices. The Dodge Only Shop said that Dodge/Chrysler is quoting the problem as fuel contamination (isn't) He also told us to expect to replace all 6 injectors every 100,000 miles. The guy that did the diagnosis use to work for a Dodge dealership.

I had sketchy injectors. How many? I don't know but I opted to replace them all. At the time I had 4 pre bought and had to source two more. I put in the 4 while I waited for the last two. The truck ran like crap with 4 new ones and also had a timing knock. When I managed to get the last two in it ran smooth with no hiccups and no issues. It may be cheaper in the long run to replace them all; but not at a dealer...

I just watched it done.I would try it,and I am not a great wrench.I had the same results as MotorCity in the post above.You will be amazed how good it runs with 6 new sticks with the timing rattle noise gone(and in my case diesel in my oil) there is a bracket between the last 2 cyl in the rear of the engine that is kinda a pain ...dont forget new tubes..get your injectors from a reputable dealer on this site..or go to the parts guy at the dealership and be blunt about what you can purchase them for(exact same part) from another source.I bought the SS bodies with tubes from the dealership for about the same as internet prices for just injectors..also..ss body wont accept old style nozzle

Also let me be clear about my post re-4 new sticks. It ran fine, when started, with the 6 old ones. It was when I put 4 new in with 2 old ones left in that it ran crappy.

:agree2::agree2: i agree with above yes that is quite pricey for a new injector, if it was me and out of warranty i would do myself. right now i seen a new set of bosch injectors on ebay all 6 for $2250.00 NEW not REbuild crap.... but yes if you can't do it yourself take to either a cummins dealer or diesel shop.. :thumbsup:

Just last weekend i had an injector go bad while on the road to a concert, so i was in the middle of no where and the injector was flooding my pistons with fuel so i had to get it replaced quick, i first went to a nearby dodge dealership and they couldnt see it till the next monday, luckily there was a cummins shop down the street so i went to them and they just replaced the one injector for $856, and since its a cummins dealer it was all done under warranty. so my advice, GO TO A CUMMINS SHOP.

if your outta warranty and dont feel like spending the $5000, i suggest taking it to a cummins shop to save money, but, i have heard that sometimes when you have an onjector go bad they recommend replacing all because sometimes these come in bad batches and eventually u will have to replace all.

Many of the vendors on the site can beat that price easily, Including me.

Lots of vendors have injectors in stock ( I have 10 sets). Remans for well under $2000 and new for not much more than $2000. Check with one of the site vendors and get out for under 1/2 the price of a dealership. I have 10 sets in stock and overnight shipping is ~$80

at that price, and if you can do it yourself it would make sense to replace them every 100k or so just to avoid some really expenses repairs due to a bad piston .

For the price of these common rail injectors you can buy a bunch of VP 44s. I dont think
i want a new truck! Why are they so much more money? Obviously we only hear about
the bad ones but there seems to be alot of problems. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just P pump a 6.7 and use some regular old injectors?

Price on 5.9L CR injectors is not much more than a VP44 if you get Re-man.

One of the double edged swords of multiple injections of the CR is higher wear on injectors, but its so nice to get 200+HP with just a box that increases injection pulse width and rail pressure.
