The Search function seems to be down today. I have a 14 CTD Laramie crew and was wondering if you go beyond the 15k mile service on the fuel filters does the truck go into a limp mode or anything at all? I have serviced the filters in the past within the 15k mile window and was just curios what happens.

I have gone past 0 and nothing happened to me. Worst case you could just reset it and make sure you get to replacing them. Only way that gets reset is when you manually reset it through the EVIC.

Your truck will explode into a giant FIREBALL!!!

Nothing happens except the miles counter on the filter monitor will continue to accrue miles, and there will be a record of it in the ecm.

Change mine at 15k intervals. No need to go past this. Clean fuel is extremely important in these modern diesel engines.
Agree 100% - would not go past 15k, however I'd almost encourage 10k intervals - considering the demands of the fuel system its almost as imperative as oil changes IMO

I started to see a slight decrease in MPG when I got to the 12k mark especially with towing on my first set, 10k is going to be where i change them from now on

I think if you go to good clean high volume fuel stations 15K is no problem, if you are stuck going to a little more shady places or hit that station where the pump is real slow because its at the bottom of the barrel then more often would be key. If the pump is real slow I stop and leave and I get 99% of mine from the same few new stations with new tanks, just where I am at. The one time I did go beyond 0, I just did not realize it had hit 0.

In 414K mikles, I have never had any fuel filter related issue, no changes in fuel economy from a 15K filter to a fresh set.

If you buy only from high volume retailers, I think the fuel filters could easily go to the same change interval used on the ford psd trucks, which IIRC is like 21 or 22K miles.

But, I keep changing mine at 15K.

None of this has anything to do with the OP's question.

Fuel filters will plug up if they are run too long, which will cause driveablity issues. Unlike oil/lubricant filters, fuel filters are not designed with a bypass system since dirty fuel will have a detrimental impact on the fuel system. Running them beyond 15,000 miles is not a big deal, but since you really won't know when the filters start getting full, it just makes sense to stick with a consistent interval.

I know almost nothing about the details of newer fuel systems, but is there any way to plumb in a pressure gauge after the fuel filter?

On my first gen, I know that when I see 3 PSI under full load, it's time for a filter change (normally runs 4 psi at WOT).

Differential pressure would be better ...pressure before and after.

Not due to fuel filters.

If the filters get so dirty that they plug solid you might notice a slight decrease in power. LOL

There is no limp mode if you run your fuel filters past 15K miles. Mine just hit 15K miles this morning and it told me to change fuel filters.

I normally run mine 1.5 times the recommended interval (or 22.5K miles) after warranty is up. Have over 100K miles doing this. I almost always buy my fuel from one of three stations. Have never noticed any change in performance or mileage between filters with 22.5K on them and new filters.

There is no limp mode, just an idiot light telling you to change. The only way your truck will go into limp mode is if the fuel filter got so clogged the engine wasn’t getting fuel, in that case, you’d get a CEL. And unless your using billy bobs diesel in the middle of nowhere, I’d reckon it’d take a long time to clog the filters.

What happens when your fuel gels? Probably the same thing.

How is the filter change message "limp mode"?

Thank you everybody! I see different opinions and experiences with fuel filter life. Have a road trip coming up and would be 500 to 1k miles beyond the 15k mark when we get home. Just ordered the filters and will change em before we leave. Up til now I changed em @ @10k. This time it’ll be @ 14k. Thanks again!
