It makes a difference if your truck is 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. It isn't that bad replacing the tie rods and shocks. It is a whole lot easier with some specialty tools to do the balls joints but they can be done with a little more time with common tools.
If it's 4wd, doesn't it have King Pins?
for me

I am no expert, by no means, but with lots of help from buddies and I got carried away had the whole front diff redone still wrapping it up on a 91.5 I have replaced driveline, new gear box lines you name it think about $4K cause my front diff was fubar and had it done outside brake calipers, think I am on month 4 cause I have full time job kids ect you know routine. but if it last nother 800K that will be cool. still wanna convert to standard cant afford it yet! man I hate automatics

the most difficult part of doing the front axle over, is the kind-pins. they guaranteed are rusted, dirty and are covered in debris, road salt, etc... theyre not going to be easy coming out. your going to some serious heat and leverage, and your best bet is going to your local steel stop and getting 2ft of 7/8th hex steel and bending it your self. the outter axle-shaft universal joints are runner up on difficult, and tie rods/ shocks are easy stuff with a good set of monkey wrenches. make sure you give your self a couple of days of down time to do this its not a one day job.
