i did a search on this subject and came up with 2 answers on my question, do i have to reset the backlash and preload when i take the ring gear out to put the new seal in and do i need to take the pinion out and set the preload or can i leave the pinion in?

if all you're doing is pulling the carrier to get at the axle seals, then you don't have to reset backlash. just make sure you put shims (If any) in the same spots. if it's the pinion seal, same goes there, shims in the same spots. you only need to set preload. and i think these don't use a crush sleave. not sure.

you do not have shims on your differential, you have the spinning adjusters and WILL NEED TO DO PRELOAD AND BACKLASH

I replaced an inner axle seal and just made marks on my adjusters to make sure I got them back in the same spot.
