Hi All,

Just wanted to hear some opinions. I stumbled across a 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 CC/LB Laramie at a small town dealership this weekend. Back in June I was looking for this exact truck, except 3500 SRW. When I couldn't find one I decided I would never buy a new truck because I didn't want to deal with urea or a truck I couldn't delete. Now since this truck is nearly everything I want it may be my last chance to own a new truck ! :hehe:

Actually, I did some soul searching if you will, in the last few months and decided urea probably isn't the worst thing. I still want a truck I could chip though (i like power :drool2:) so I figured Id get into an older cummins (went from 07 t0 02 which = no payment) and wait until a programmer was available for the new trucks in a year or two and save my money in the meantime. Of course now that I see this truck I have the hunger for a new rig again which is the reason for this discussion thread:

1 - Is it worth buying a 2012 and deleting. Up here in AB, Canada I would say over half of the 2010 - 12 cummins trucks are deleted. Dealers even warranty deleted trucks if you pay them to do the deletes. I have many friends with 2012s (there would crazy deals on them back in June) that have deleted them and love em. My concern would be,if I buy a 2012, I would want to keep it for 8 - 10 years, and i wouldn't want to have to re-install all the emission crap in 5 years because of a federal crackdown on emissions equipment and be stuck drive a truck I hate for the remaining 3 - 5 years of ownership. Whats everyones thoughts on the future for deleted trucks? Just looking for opinions as nothing is certain but I'd be interested to hear what people know/think.

Of course the other option is keep the 02 as planned and get an enviromentally friendly cummins in a few years and never "roll coal" again :hehe: :stirpot:

I would say yes it is worth it. Even more so if you local dealer is OK with the deletes. The comfort of the 4th gen trucks is very nice IMO. Regarding the possibility of having to re-install DPF later? Who knows... you can't base your actions off that because its so unpredictable.

I would buy the 2012, delete/tune, and keep your DPF/EGR parts and enjoy the 2012 as long as you can.

:agree2: Save those "extra" parts though. I see some guys selling them but they'll have to spend a fortune buying them back if/when they have to undelete.

What all was said above is true.

Here is a quote from my hunting shack: "When all is said and done, more will be said than done."

Don't let that apply to you! Get us some pictures of the truck and go make the deal if you like it. You talk to 8 Lug Truck Gear, Glacier Diesel Power, Rollin Smoke Diesel and others to hook your truck up like I and many others have and you will never have a worry.

I have a 2012, use it for work. Haven't deleted yet, but it's coming. I love the truck. Does great offroad. Hasn't left me stranded yet. They hold their value quite well also, so you can't really go wrong with them.

Bought my 2012 just over 2 months ago. I love it! I have just over 10k miles on it and they have been the most fun miles I have ever put on a truck/car. I have been deleted now for about 5500 of those miles. I agree with keeping your "extra" parts. I have them in my garage on the floor in case if the need ever arises to put them back on.

Thanks for the comments guys! You encouraged me to trek out to the dealer again and take a closer look at the truck. Turns out the salesman didn't give me the straight goods the first time - one the truck that is labelled as "NEW 2012" has over 700km on it. Not a deal breaker but typically to me "NEW" means less than 100km. The deal breaker is the fact that while the dealership considers it new, Chrysler Corp. does not.

The dealership "bought" the truck off Chrysler in February of 2013. This means warranty started calculating off of that date - meaning the truck has already used up just under 11 months of its warranty.

And finally the price is only about 4 - 5000 cheaper than what my buddy bought his loaded 13 3500 SRW for, so I don't see any real benefit it buying it since it is just a super low km 2012. If I wanted a used truck I could probably find one even closer to my desired specs for much cheaper with a little more km on it (seen a few with 20,000-40,000km on them) which would be fine with me - if I was in the market for a used truck

Just when I got all excited for finding a new 2012 it turns out "used" :banghead: Guess ill be running the 02 for a while yet :rof

Thanks for the tip. I will check that out but being in Canada I cannot buy a new vehicle from the USA without losing all factory warranty (and most dealers will require an American Address to even sell it I believe). I will check ebay.ca (Canadian ebay haha) but seeing as I am not really in desperate need of a new truck I probably won't be going out of my way to buy one unless I stumbled across a smoking deal on another long box. The main reason I was interested in the one that started this post is because it was local and pretty close to exactly what I wanted (even the color was correct). It seemed almost like a gift from the "Gods" that I found it finally after all the hours I spent searching for a longbox back in June hahaha.

I actually prefer the interiors of the 2012 over the 2013/14 models anyways... Let alone not having to with the urea is an added benefit but not a huge deal... if you have the cash though, the 2014's coming out with the coil spring rear ends will make for an awesome ride!

Question:

If Chrysler doesn't consider the truck as new, won't you lose the benefit of factory warranty?

I wouldn't hesitate buying a 2012 truck as long as the price is right and you get a warranty. Get the dealership you're buying the truck from to include a warranty in the deal.

Good luck. Big decision!

Yes correct and that is why I am not interested. Since chrysler sees the truck as being sold on February 2, 2013 that is when they calculate the warranty from. Meaning there is just over 4 years left of the 5 year warranty. The dealer considers it new because it never left their lot or was every sold to a customer even though they "bought" it off chrysler. The reason a NEW 2012 is so appealing to me is to get that benefit of a full factory warranty, along with the satisfaction of having a brand new truck. Since this truck doesn't have that it no longer peaks my interest like before. I am going to keep my eyes open for a new 2012 still as I have been but I doubt I'll find a long box. Lots of 3500 SRW short boxes around here is ST trim as well as a few with Longhorn trims but no long boxes so I am not holding my breath!

Lol. Stealerships. I drove past a Ford dealership a few months ago and spotted a blue Raptor sitting on a truck ramp. Wife wanted to take a peek for herself, so we shimmied on over there.

Truck looked new until I got within 10 feet of it. Had 47k miles and was beat to piss. I noticed a new vehicle sticker in the window and asked the salesman what was up with that?

Oh it's a demo truck, so we can sell it as a new truck. I said yeah, but I'm sure you'll take like 15k off for the miles right? No, we might take 1-2k off for you. Would you like to drive it? I drove away laughing.

I'd say buy it but I'm partial to the 12 + deleting =D

Only thing to consider if you do not want the long box and want a short I would search for a short box even if you have to find a babied used one cause its lot of coin to regret down road ! Hence why myself decided to go all out no regrets here!
