I'm trying to decide what turbo to go with. I originally wanted to go with the Fleece Cheetah because it would be cheaper because there is no need to buy a separate exhaust brake. But, after talking with Fleece, they say 100 HP injectors are recommended, and that comes with all the supporting mods like lift pump, CP3, etc. The cost quickly adds up. 4-5 G's in parts is what I came up with

Been doing a lot of reading on the S400 conversions. I have a Third gen two piece manifold sitting in my garage. From what I understand, if the third gen. manifold is used, I could use my stock intake, which appeals to me for the sake of looking more stock.(2nd gen conversion is out of the question for this reason), and I have a mod in mind to make something like a torque tube for it. I would like to get the most out of my stock fuel system with no modifications except an additional fuel filter. I think an S465 would work well according to another thread. So I've seen the turbos for about $1000, exhaust brake is about $1100 and on board air is coming anyway so that should take care of the brake. Also, a vendor on here is working on using the stock exhaust brake button which is a plus. so for about 2-3 grand less, unless I'm forgetting some expense somewhere, the truck would run great with an S400 series turbo!

On another note, I had a HTT 62/65/14 on my 5.9 on stock fuel, and it ran and towed GREAT! Hoping to get the 4th gen to run like that.

If my information is off, please let me know, as well as your thoughts between the two, especially if you had the Fleece VGT or an S465 and towed with them, since towing is this trucks main duty.

Thanks in advance!

I'm surprised to read what you said about Fleece recommending 100HP injectors. There's another thread floating around here with a guy who just got a fleece vgt and says its awesome. If guys decide to chime in here, you're going to get several guys saying go 2nd gen and a few might say fleece vgt. I am curious though, why are you trying to "look more stock for the sake of it?"

If you're seriously about it, I'd talk to one of the vendors on the site and start emailing back and forth with them. They'd best be able to answer your questions and would have lots of experience and input to back their claims up.

Thanks for responding. I have a couple vendors in mind to message when it comes time to order the parts. Saving for a revmax now. I saw the thread about the Fleece you are talking about, I was going to message him and see if he has towed with it and how it performed. I would like to use the stock intake because of bad experiences with oiled filters, and the availability of the stock filter, you can find it anywhere and cheaper and looking stock is a benefit for me.

I just installed my Cheetah about a week ago and I couldn't be happier! Who ever said it needs 100 hp injectors is smoking crack. It spools even better than a stock turbo and pulls very hard. My only fueling mods are a fass pump. I do want to do injectors and a steed speed manifold to open up the breathing for the turbo. I haven't really ripped on the truck due to the fact that I don't want to have head gasket issues until I put studs in but it flats moves my 37's!!

For me I could not have a truck without an EB. That's the whole reason I love the 4th gen so much.

I may be upgrading to a 14 if I do the turbo will be swapped out and I would love to do twins as I feel the twins could get me exactly where I want to be.

As far as cost. I belive with overnight shipping (which took 3 days) and what not it was right at 2300 dollars. Spendy yes. But if your looking at a non VGT turbo then buy a manifold and then buy an aftermarket exhaust brake you well over that and correct me if I am wrong but there isn't an aftermarket exhaust brake that fits a 5" exhaust so that would need to be re worked.

I have been putting this off for quite a while as we had a turbo on my old work truck (shop foreman has that truck now) start to go bad and when it finally puked I didn't know what to get. I've read all kinds of reviews online about how the vgt didn't get them what they wanted or DP was thru the roof etc.. I couldn't be any happier than a pig in crap.

I have not towed with the turbo yet but will most likely later this week. I am also going to Colorado next week so I will do a MPG test. So far my egt's are down a safe 100 degrees from a stock turbo.

I was originally sent a turbo from fleece that was defective. The actuator was bad so I had to have them send me another one. Once it was replaced it worked great. It did take them a week to get me a new turbo because they were so far behind on orders. That was my only complaint about fleece, and the fact that I had to take my truck to a dealer and have the VGT tested and that cost me $165 and fleece didn't offer to re imburse me for that.

In terms of being put back in the seat a big single can't be beat. When I went from my s480 to my s467 I was a little disappointed because of the distinct loss of power. So much so I went back. Towing is whole different ball game though

Thanks for all that info. Luvnacummins! Can't wait to hear how it tows. That's the main concern. If it does tow well, my decision will be made. NEED to have that E brake. If I end up with the S400 an inline E brake will be bought for sure. I would love to hear what MPG's you get with that turbo too. Those with the s400's claim good mileage.
Dman1198, do you have any fuel mods?

Mine has never been the best. With a decent tail wind I can crack 20mpg. No tail wind all highway generally nets 18ish. Daily commute (a bunch of idling, quick accel, 15ish minutes with cruise set) summer mid 16's (about the same as the stock turbo did, but the 480 has 20mm on the stock comp inducer so I'm calling it a win for the 80) winter 12-14 (again close to stock)

I do drive briskly though. In Canada I do at least 10 over the limit, and inthe states I do 5 over (km vs. mph) and no I don't have any fuel mods. Just tuning so far. I'll need a trans before I can add fuel to it

Luvnacummins, do you have any transmission upgrades? How is it holding up?

I have no trans mods as of yet. This is my second 4th gen and I've got over 250k miles between the two truck and almost half a million miles in our fleet and zero transmission issues. All deleted and running h and s.

I should be headed to Colorado next week and I will be towing a Toyota tundra so I will give the turbo a workout and see what it can do.

I'd love to hear how it goes. Also no converter or valve body? How's the lag on it?

Bone stock from the factory. There is zero lag. It lights just as fast as stock and maybe even a hair faster and then it just pulls. :drool2:
