Been browsing here for a week and figured I would introduce myself. I bought a 06 5.9 with 95K a week and a half ago. The truck looked pretty good, has a lift but not too high. The stealership put a brand new set of BFG mudders on the 18" wheels and I was pretty happy until I talked to the Previous owner yesterday.

I had found a packet of confidential tax and other info in the seat pocket and thought the guy probably wants it back so I found his number in there and called him. He said Thanks and he's very sorry I bought the truck, it was going to crap and thats why he got rid of it. It had a rebuilt trans at the dealership 20K ago and I new that from talking to the dealership that did it but they put all stock parts in it. He hauls cattle almost exclusively on dirt roads and said he worked that truck like a dog but was always on top of the maintenance and didnt tow out of tow haul. He said the trans overheated 3 times after it was rebuilt and the turbo started to screech going up hills. He also had the ball joints replaced but of course they replaced them with factory joints and they are going out again.

I have not heard the screeching turbo or had issues with the trans except a slight clunk when it shifts down into 1st but I also dont tow much except a decent size boat a few times a year. I guess My post here is to say hi and say Ill probably be spending alot of time here as I try to get these issues sorted out. If anyone has any tips on these feel free to speak up, Ive done a bunch of research already but input always helps.

Hey man just wanted to say hi and welcome you to the forums. I am sure that people will start chiming in soon with advice. Hope that the truck works out for you.
i wouldn't worry to much about what other people say about your new truck, if you're happy leav'er it at that.
Drive the beast, enjoy it and that's all you can do, it's a used vehicle surprises will always arise but no use in freaking yourself out. I had a similar situation with an old vw golf I had years ago I sold to a friend for a song because I was afraid of the problems I thought it had so I sold it to a friend for a song. 7 years later still running strong with just maintenance. kinda wish I asked for more money lol. enjoy the truck, and since I am a recent new owner this site can't be beat, you will encounter an issue, post up or search for it, find possible causes to investigate and a solution and most likely find a write up on how to fix it. Best of luck

cheers
Thanks for the kind replies. This is not my first rodeo with diesels. Ive owned 2 fords with the 7.3 (four transmissions) and an 05 Duramax (head gaskets) as well. I was hoping to find a 5.9 long bed with a manual trans but they are so hard to get a hold of and this 5.9 with the auto showed up. It definitely was against my better judgement going with the auto but the truck was well under the going rate for any 06 long bed I could find. I was hoping for a truck that would last a long time with minimal problems. Im a mechanic and do a lot of research on my equipment so the upkeep should be normal as long as I have a good truck to start out with. I guess we will see. Heres a pic.

Welcome to the forum!
Welcome! Truck looks very sharp!

You are in the right place, use the search function and if you don't find what you need you can always ask! With the number of guys on this site it's highly unlikely you will ever have to deal with something no one else has seen!

Good luck!

Sharp looking truck. As others have said, don't worry drive the beast. Oh and welcome to the Cummins Forum.
Good looking truck. There might be some things you can do to make the tranny last longer, do some reading for some ideas. Turbo screech? I'm not sure what that would be unless a bearing is going out, which is not that tough to replace a turbo.

Good luck with the truck.

Im looking into trans coolers, It says on my build sheet that I have an AUX trans cooler but I don't know if that's normal or an extra option, hopefully its normal and I can add a larger one for better cooling. Im also going to check the bands and probably replace the trans fluid and filter. I have noticed a lot of the fixes are not hard but all require money.
Welcome and enjoy the cummins motor:thumbsup:
