I got my first dually a few days ago and i tried to back up my 16' car hauler in my driveway and realized i couldnt see it...Well i could, but at night it was tough! What do yall do about this? I was thinking of a back up camera or a set of lights on my rear bumper to light up the area behind the truck...Any other ideas? Im aure ill get use to it after time, but i was just curious. Plus my neighbor is a NUTT about his yard and the last thing i need is to run a trailer up in his yard :hehe:
Thanks guys!

You could take your tailgate off and watch it out the rear window. It's either that, pvc, or a po'd neighbor.

You'd think tow mirrors would be part of a tow "package" on any truck.

Tow Mirrors make a HUGE difference in a DRW. Back up light help a lot at night, long truck and all it just makes it harder to see whats back there. If its a box trailer it will be easy with tow mirrors, if its a flatbed its always gonna have blind back there, but no where near what it is now...

I have towed a little of everything, and sport mirrors will not do for 90% on a DRW. Try the sets from e-bay that are power/heated (if you have that option) once you get used to heat in mirrors you are spoiled IMO.

i have the same problem, the back up camera doesnt help at all because the amount you correct the trailer on the screen is not the same as actually seeing it.i have clearance lights mounted on the rear most uprights of my other trailer and it helps to get it squared up to the driveway, but other than that, when i back up my 16' car hauler i use the drivers window to look at the trailer as im turning so i know that if im on the edge of my driveway then im clear of my neighbours lawn.then i just eyeball the trailer fenders and my dually flares from the side mirrors to keep it lined up.it gets harder at night unless the cars on the trailer then i just watch the drivers side and know how far over i can get it from doing it many times.the tow mirrors help a fair bit so i would start with that first.good luck

yea the tow mirrors make all the differnce. i can back trailers up easy in my drw but put me in the company truck and its a 2500 srw adn without th etow mirrors i hate backign even without the drw's. and you will get use to it i have gotten to were i cna back up a 10 ft long quad trailer, but those get fun because once you can see it out of a mirror its to late to straightin in out..lol. it just takes time though you will get use to it.

tow mirrors are the cats meow, and personally i LOVE having a pair of AUX backup lights, the factory lights dont do a whole lot of anything. If you really want to see whats going on you need to shine some light on the situation!

ii use the drivers window to look at the trailer as im turning so i know that if im on the edge of my driveway then im clear of my neighbours lawn./QUOTE]

If I hit the neighbor lawn I am 1/4 mile from my driveway and really should have gotten a designated driver! The flip up tow mirrors help alot and everytime my dad uses my truck he flips them down. I have gotten used to the way things look in the mirrors with them up. I cannot see crap with them folded down, the fender gets in the way.

its by guess and by god at night

the method i use is a spotter or 2 foot 2x4's stuck in the stake pockets on the trailer
tailgate down and work lights on at night.

If you have a car trailer then it has fenders. Mount clearance lights on the top of the outside of the fenders and you will be able to see where the trailer is at night

This works for me. Once you have the trailer hook up pull straight and look for a reference on your truck to your trailer. Then the next time you go to hook up use these reference points. the dulley fenders are probably as wide as your car trailers fenders, so if you line up the two you will be close.Another trick I use is to jack the trailer hitch to the height of the ball not over the top and back slow till you just bump the ball and get out and raise the trailer and back up really slow about an inch or so and get out and drop the trailer on the hitch. Works most of the time,80% of the time!
I drive a gravel train in the detriot area and we use the tire to tire method to hook up so I guess i get a lot of practice.
