Got the first check engine light on my truck. 65,400km. Started up this morning in -15C after being plugged in for 2 hours. Was running rough but cleaned up as it warmed up. Wife tries to remote start it at the end of the day and it was throwing the CEL and running like an "old diesel" as she put it. It cleaned up as she brought it home. P0301, which appears to be cylinder 1 misfire. I cleared the code and it was running fine since. I tossed in some antigel to be on the safe side and drained the rear filter. No water and the fuel was not cloudy.

Will monitor and if it pops up again I will send her to the dealer for warranty. Seems that this could be as simple as a loose connector or the start of the injector dying.

If it was a gelled fuel issue, it wouldn't be just one cylinder, and would also throw other codes.

Definitely don't clear the code next time, get it to the dealer with the code still active.

Ya I wanted to eliminate fuel as the issue, which it was. I have lots of warranty left so in it goes next time. issue is that it is a 200km round trip to the nearest dealer. 250km to the selling dealer.

Just an update for all. Truck ran fine all year but decided to run like garbage last week. Surging, rough idle and it threw an itermitant code again. Was an hour from home and I couldn't drive past 80km/h on the highway as it felt like I lost all the wheel weights.

Off to the dealer. Confirmed my fuel filter change interval and that there is no chance for summer fuel in the tank. The dealer drew fuel and said it "tested" fine.

They said they did an update and that should take care of it. Well I rolled in and picked it up. Rough idle and got a few miles from the dealer and it was really bad again. By the time I drove back, the thing was running fine.

I took the tech out for a ride and explained my trouble shooting and gave as much info as possible. They did another round of testing the next day and by golly they are ordering an injector.

Now we wait a couple of weeks for it to come in. Nothing like being a welfare case bumming rides for our horses.

We got a call this am that our truck was ready for pick up. By chance my wife had to rip to Crimetown anyway, so she bummed a ride in. Truck was cold soaked at -21c and ran like a champ again. I haven't viewed the work order but she said they changed injector 1 and 5. I am not sure if that's a companion cylinder or what. It's possible 5 was misfiring but only 1 was getting picked up.

Hopefully this thing can stay out of the shop for a bit longer. I don't run any additives, perhaps I should, maybe only amsoil or some other fluid Jimmy N has.

Yes, glad they fixed you up ... but, jeez, injector problems at 64K kms?
Using quality mopar/fleetguard filters?
Perhaps poor quality local diesel? If so, PowerService DieselKleen might help:

But, you don't know what part of the injectors failed, there is a mechanical component to them AND an electronic component. If the failure was in the electronic component, then no amount of injector cleaner or fuel filtering would have made any difference.

When the injectors went south on mine, it was electronic failure, just enough to keep throwing codes, even though the engine ran perfectly once the fault codes were cleared, so the only conclusion was electronic failure.

True. And I guess the symptoms are similar?
"Surging, rough idle and it threw an itermitant code again"
But in your case the engine ran fine it was just a code?

Nope, mine ran bad when the code popped, but if you stopped and cleared the code it ran perfect again, so it was electronics at fault, had it been mechanical it would still run bad and throw the codes again immediately.

Mine eventually involved all 6 injectors throwing the codes.

So I run the Factory Fleetguard FS53000 filter and what ever version of the Racor water separator I can find at a decent price, Mopar, Fleetguard and Baldwin. All the same.

Now when it was running like garbage earlier this year, I cleared the code and it ran fine for most of the day. It did not come back that day but the truck ran like garbage after another cold start.

This past time, truck ran fine, parked at the pump and filled the tank. Instantly on startup it was running rough, I went a couple of blocks, shut the truck off while in neutral and it ran good on restart.

I too suspect electrical. Hey Lins, it is balmy here. -21 isn't bad, although the -30 windchill sucks.... Its almost t shirt weather down south here.
