Just as the title says. I'm driving in the city and come to a red light and it's all normal. Turns green and when I take off the fan sounds really loud untill I get to like 35mph. Maybe my fan clutch is going out? Anyone with ideas? Btw this is on my 08 mega cab. H&s mini max only

There is zero ram air through the radiator when at a light, so it makes perfect sense to me that it would engage to provide cooling to dump the heat left in the engine from the run up to the light . . .

Perfectly normal, especially with warm/hot ambient temps. The fact that the fan comes on and then goes of shows that your fan clutch is working properly. If it were bad then the fan would never come on.

Not to jack the thread, but,
what about a noisy fan at cruise? In a 2007 6.7 as we speak for a demo... Probably going to pull the trigger in morning..
Anyway, this fan is noisy pretty much all the time... When we were driving it home, after few minutes sitting in traffic, we got on highway... From that point on I could hear the fan. It is literally loud enough to be annoying at highway speeds. I am really thinking it is the mechanical side of the fan locking up.. Just seeing if anyone has heard of this...

Yes my fan does the same thing at highway speeds but only if its hot outside. I can hear it come on and off inside the cab and it can be very annoying. I am also wondering if something is wrong with mine. It doesn't do it all the time but randomly.
Mine is a 2012 w 2500 miles on it and it made the noise even when I test drove it brand new.

We went ahead and pulled the trigger on the truck..... :party018:

Yea this noise seems highly odd... Today we went and signed all the papers. It is approx 40 miles to the dealer..

The temp gauge never went too 200 degrees....

After driving around 10 minutes I could start to hear it fire off on the highway and was consistent.. Really annoying when accelerating.

Around the thirty minute mark we pulled off for some breakfast. After truck sitting for approx 1.5 hours, the fan was still very loud once started.
Before we headed out I pulled to hood and had the wife workin throttle. I just wanted to verify that the noise was in fact from the fan area..

I had the hood up, and I was standing next to the mirror drivers side telling the wife how much throttle to give it. She kicked it up to (guessing here) 2500 RPM and it damn near blew my hat off.. I was by the mirror looking into the cab at this time.. This think has some airflow!!!! Just seems little much to me after sitting for so long.. Noise is definitely the fan..

Little more info

Ambient temp around 75
Did not drive truck real hard, just hard enough to enjoy the fact that now I can gain speed, uphill, without vehicle downshifting..... :drool2:

Disclaimer.... "Hill" = overpass..

Update.......... Installed new fan clutch today......... No help.

First start it up I can hear the fan for first few miles.

After first few miles fan is engaged and stays that way.. Stop, accell, cruise for aprox 2 minutes around 50mph, does not matter, it is locked....

Pulled in driveway, let it idle for a sec, then kicked idle up to around 1500 rpm for aprox 30 seconds.... Fan still full throttle..

I cannot find anything on ALLDATA as far as specifics on what all the modules look at for fan control.. I know coolant temp (mine never went above 200) should be one of the primary factors. Would seem there would be other inputs like calculated load and such that should also effect fan control..

I am going to try to force a regen tomorrow night and see if possibly that has something to do with it.. I seriously doubt it, but, either way it would not hurt. Figure this thing has only really been test driven for the last three months.....

Seriously starting to regret this purchase........... And I LOVE this truck...

do a search for engaging plow mode. There is a way to turn on plow mode which engages the fan way more aggressively for running a snow plow to compensate for the plow blocking air flow, I have heard that it takes several tries to engage and disengage the feature, try it out its a free fix if it works

Just out of curiousity... are you using A/C (maybe not, since you said it's been 75*F Ambient?) Or are you running with the DEFROST on? :confused013: Defrost, in ANY mode (whether it be partial or Full windshield) uses the A/C compressor. Maybe, just a maybe, you have it in Defrost and the compressor is signaling fan? :confused013:

I have a friend that drives with defrost on ALL the time! Even when it's blazing hot outside!

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Well tried it, no go, sounds pretty much same both off and on. With Plow mode disengaged, it does a little better, very little.

A/C does not seem to really make a difference.

Kinda on hold pattern from worrying about it for a while........... Bout to blow :whip:

Sorry, that makes me sound like a jerk.....

Yea, if the A/C being on is effecting it, it is not enough to tell....

Came home with scan tool reading fan speed.. Pretty much matching RPM all the time.... (give or take a couple of hundred and a time delay) I was not recording, so, was kinda hard to watch and drive.......

Well, I don't really know about the fans on these engines (since we don't use fans here or if we do, they're direct drive!) but MY personal experience... I dunno! :hehe:

Sorry! Not to make light of your problem, but I don't think mine works in my Dodge now. I just got a used one from a member here, so have to wait til it gets here. Not even sure if there's a way to test these fans with scan tool or DRBIII? I know my electrics I had on my 1500 where activated by A/C Comp during defrost AND A/C modes, because the heat needed transferred for A/C to work. I can only ASSUME these engines would have the fan work the same. :confused013:

I'll ask around when there are Engineers present. Be Patient, used2bfast! Someone will find an answer, I'm sure.

The way I tested my ( on my Jeep) is with a cold motor and the hood open reach down to the fan and spin the fan. If its bad it will free spin. If its good it will have resistance.

I can't tell you how many "bad" parts I have got that were brand new or reman....

Also, check out the water pump. Could be something going on there. Good luck

I recently Started to Push My 2015 Dodge Ram 3500 a little between 80-85MPH, and it has been a little warmer out when you hear a loud fan kick in, and as soon as I come down to 70-75MPH , the fan turns off. My question is? Is it supposed to make a loud Fan Wooooo Sound that you can hear and feel inside truck.?? If It turns on and off when cooled I Believe it’s working Properly but can someone let me know if the Clutch Fan is supposed to be that loud?, or is that a sign that it’s going BAD???
