exhaust size question

1720 Views 19 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  copper2013
It is time for the stacks to be removed off my truck and I am wondering when it a 5" exhaust needed? I have a 4" downpipe and running a s400 single turbo. Is the money spent on a 5" system worth it or just a waste of money. Thanks

A 5" system and a 4" system should be around the same cost maybe within a hundred bucks, that being said you should be fine with a 4" system you have no NEED for a 5" system, it's just sound prefference at this point for you, however you aer going to lose back pressure in a 5" granted there is no muffler or cat.
not to highjack the thread but is one better than the other if you do a good amount of towing?egt wise
I dropped about 100 degrees egt wise after having my 5" installed, but my dad with his 4" runs about the same egt levels I do.
I have wondered about this also,, The most I plan on doing to mine is the smarty, I am just about sold on the 4" system.
Is the 5" that much louder than a 4, is that the reason guys like the 5"?
The 5" is supposedly deeper & cuts out some of the raspy-ness….Planning on a turbo back 5" as my next purchase
I switched from a 4" inch straight to a 5" with resonater, it simply makes it a deeper tone, and not so.... rice burner type?
Yeah I'm with pete on this one, my 5" has really deep tone and sounds like a real diesel, my dad's 4" has a muffler so it's not very loud but still sounds good.
the kit will have a muffler and the drone that comes with my 7" bull haulers is a bit much and that is with a flo-pro muffler.
Yeah you should be fine then, mine is straight through with nothing from the turbo, and it's loud when I want it to be and does have a little drone, the muffler will help with that no doubt.
Running a 4in MBRP going to switch to a 5in here soon.
My 5" inch system with high flow muffler had a terrible drone at 50 to 65 under a load. Used exhaust wrap to get rid of it (50 feet of 2" to get from the turbo to the muffler). Going to get rid of the muffler if I ever get the time.
I have 4in on my truck and my buddy has 5in his is a lot deeper quieter tone
I wouldn't go near a 5", people say they're not loud but a lotta people say their 4" straight piped exhaust isn't loud and has no drone too. Went for a ride in one, I think maybe the guy was deaf.
I did a search on here, wish I hadda bookmarked 1 thread where I guy had gone through a dozen different combinations with his 5", he ended up taking it off, going to a 4" with a Donaldson muffler which would be my advice.

Most people got with 5" cuz they think it looks cool but few will admit it.

Its definitely not quite by any means if your towing or anything, but a 5" exhaust looking cool? I didn't realize you could see much of the exhaust except for the tip... I can't at least with my truck, I wanted the deeper log truck sound and love it, but it is definitely different opinions, if I could do it over I'd go right back to 5" but I do like the sound of my dads four inch and on some long trips I wish mine was 4".
I have the 5"MBRP Turbo back and its got a deeper tone than stock, it isnt as loud as a 4"TBE that my neighbor has. It was worth every penny
5 inch makes such an incredible sound with these 325HO
Ya, incredibly noisy ...

(IMO of course)
4" helps over 3.5" when HP gets over 350. 5" helps over around 500-550 HP although with twins, not so much as the second turbo extracts a lot more heat.
