I am looking to upgrade my exhaust and here is my thinking, please correct me if I am wrong. My truck has a 3.5” from the turbo back to the muffler, and then it is 4” out of the muffler. If I put a 4” turbo back exhaust on, it will still be 3.5” out of the turbo to a 4” exhaust pipe, thus not achieving the full gains of a 4” exhaust, as it is restricted to 3.5” out of the turbo.

As I am not going to modify the engine, is this worthwhile and cost effective, or would I see the same gains (reduced egt’s and maybe a small increase in mpg) by simply replacing the factory muffler? I do tow a boat and a fifth wheel, often at the same time so I do not want anything loud; so a muffler delete is not an option. I was thinking of getting a Donaldson M090544 muffler, and just replacing the stock one to achieve a free flowing exhaust. I can also do this for under $100, and I am not convinced that spending more for the 4” exhaust would provide any more benefit for a stock truck. Let me know what you think, thanks.

You will see about the same results,The aftermarket has a little better bends but probably not enough difference for your application to worry about it.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I am sure a 4" is better than stock, but I just didn't think that it would be cost effective on a stock truck, and that I would net essentially the same gains with the new muffler.

You would be supurised how much half an inch helps, look at your muffler carefully, the exhaust shrinks down to 3" when it goes into the muffler. With just the Edge Box i had on my truck, using my hand as a measuring tool, the 4" turbo back flowed about 2x the air at idle over the stock. IT sounds more awsome too, you can really hear the turbo now.

That is interesting. I guess I will note my current egts with the stock exhaust, and then after the new muffler. If it is not any different, then perhaps I can get a take off turbo down tube and pipe to the mufler off a 04.5 + from a salvage yard and install that as well. Or perhaps see if I can buy an aftermarket exhaust without a muffler, as I am pretty convinced that I want to buy the Donaldson muffler. Thanks
