I am looking to upgrade my exhaust and here is my thinking, please correct me if I am wrong. My truck has a 3.5” from the turbo back to the muffler, and then it is 4” out of the muffler. If I put a 4” turbo back exhaust on, it will still be 3.5” out of the turbo to a 4” exhaust pipe, thus not achieving the full gains of a 4” exhaust, as it is restricted to 3.5” out of the turbo.
As I am not going to modify the engine, is this worthwhile and cost effective, or would I see the same gains (reduced egt’s and maybe a small increase in mpg) by simply replacing the factory muffler? I do tow a boat and a fifth wheel, often at the same time so I do not want anything loud; so a muffler delete is not an option. I was thinking of getting a Donaldson M090544 muffler, and just replacing the stock one to achieve a free flowing exhaust. I can also do this for under $100, and I am not convinced that spending more for the 4” exhaust would provide any more benefit for a stock truck. Let me know what you think, thanks.
