yes, i read the manual. I understand that it is used for breaking assistance. I also read someone on here said to use it to clear the soot build up on these things. Is this correct? Like i said i read the manual but cant figure out how to activate it.

Under your controls for the radio and whatnot, right near the button to turn off traction control, there is a button that looks like a circle with an exhaust puff inside it (for lack of a better description). Pressing it once is the full on position and an amber light will pop up on the dash. This will engage the exhaust brake as soon as the throttle input is zero. Pressing the button again will light up a green symbol on the dash and this engages the exhaust brake when throttle is zero and brake pedal is depressed.

I've read the claims about leaving it on cleaning the vanes on the VGT... not sure if its true, but I leave mine in the full on position everywhere I drive... I cant see why it would cause any issues, and between that and rowing my own gears, I'll probably never have to do brakes haha

Using it doesn’t in theory clean anything, but it does keep parts designed to movingoving , eliminating the possible build up of soot

 - too funny - I had the same issue....nowhere in the manual/s does it tell you how to activate it!! There is a "FULL ON" one push, lights up orange in dash, and then I believe an "AUTOMATIC" one (push twice?), lights up green in the dash. I roll everyday with it on FULL ON...just becasue I like the sound of it:grin2:

But apparently, as I have read, it is good to clear out soot from binding up the vanes in the turbo - ESPECIALLY if you do a lot of "mall crawling" and not a lot of highway, full throttle, blow out the Prius's driving...or towing.

I am also reading that driving it in Tow/Haul mode is better performance :surprise:

Just an FYI, also dramatically helps your truck warm up on those bitter cold morning, I generally start out my commute in full EB, then when she is nice and toasty go to Auto EB, and yeah, 2 years with my truck and just figured out that you press it twice for Auto. So much damn info on these trucks you need a manual the size of a Chilton repair book to learn it all. Always wonder what other little tech tricks I am missing. But, that is what this forum is for! Sharing intel.......

Thanks guys. I got it figured out. Seeing how I only haul Aussiedoodles and a wife, I dont have much need for it. Wife wants to get a travel tailor so i figured i better learn to use it. Here is what i have come up with. One button push is used for everyday or braking assistance to slow the truck. Two button press is to cap the speed at which the truck will increase to, such as going down a grade with or without a load. I love the sound and will use it daily. I read the supplemental, so unless the roads are dry i wont turn it on. That is my rule of thumb may not be right but its what i'm comfortable with.

I don't know about the new VGT brakes, but the old style in the exhaust only sounds neat inside the cab. Outside the sound is a hiss.

I liked the sound of the VGT EB (Exhaust Brake). Sounds like a big-rig jake brake (JB). I'll bet it sounds even cooler on a straight piped truck. (this is where a Hot Air Intake would shine too)

Then I replaced the Turbo with a Non-VGT unit, causing the loss of EB (Exhaust Brake). So I installed a "real" EB in the exhaust. Basically an air controlled valve that blocks the gasses.

The sound sucks, sounds like a "Hisssssss" when used. Then a loud POP when it releases.

I may install a valve based brake system next.

I wonder how much, if any, the life of the transmission is shortened by having it on all the time.

Why would it?

Well without the exhaust brakes on, your truck wont always leave the converter locked as you coast to a stop, but when that's on without a load it will hit every gear on the way down and unlock and lock after every shift as you slow down. And without a load on the truck it has to down shift quickly through the gears. Significantly more work for the transmission.
Not only that but also with it on the converter now has to take the work your tires are doing and transfer that to the motor.
Just a thought, like I said I'm really not sure it makes a difference but I do know it is way more work on the transmission.

It sounds the same outside as inside just louder. Very similar to big rig grumble but not as loud. At idle it will usually make hissing noise.

I won’t lie, it’s kind of fun hitting the EB when rolling past a Prius on the freeway.
Childish, but fun none the less.

I've heard it's actually better to run it to keep the turbo veins in check. I don't personally run it all the time but I know some people use it all the time. Just kind of preference. I personally like to hit the brake but some people like to just lift off the throttle and have the truck slow down. It does sound cool :0

Just over 9k and I run it in auto everyday, if I'm towing I put it to full.
