Is it safe to drill a hole in my exhaust manifold with it on the truck? I'm worried about metal shavings getting through the turbo and messin it up. I've heard some people say drilling and taping the hole while its running will work? I was going to grease the hell out if the bit and use a magnet and a shop-vac with a straw on the end but I really don't want to buy a new turbo right now.:S:

thats the way i did it and didnt have any problems, just take your time and go slow when drilling and use alot of grease on the drill bit and tap.

going slow will make small shavings.and will not affect ,or harm the turbo.
thousands of people have drilled their man. and i have not read one single post of anyone hurting there turbo

just go slow and don't over worry

I wouldn't use grease on the drill bit, the bit is designed to pull shavings out while drilling and grease would just plug up the flutes, just have a shop vac running while drilling and suck up any shavings after drilling the hole, I would use grease on the tap.

ok i just asked every one this Q: here is what i got out of it. When ur drilling go slow. this is with the truck off. dont use any thing to lube it up. this will just cause the fillings to stick to every thing inside the pipe. when u tap the hole do it by hand again with no lube. I use taps all the time and iv seen them snap alot. so i went out to the local snap-on man. it was about 7 bucks but worth it. didnt even scratch the tap when i tapped it in. it was more for a sence of mind than any thing else. other thna that when ur done letthe truck run for a min or 2 and have fun. the turbos cummins use are built to last. the guy who builds them told me it could take a quarter 20 nut go's through it with eaze. so relax and enjoy ur nw mod

Just did mine last weekend. From what i have read and seen. It is recommended not to drill with the engine on. Not to put grease on your bits. Drill bits are designed to move the debris away from the place you are drilling,

I took the inner fender off my truck to insure i was drilling straight and not on an angel. I center punched the exhaust manifold. Then started with smaller bits and worked my way up to the size i needed. Used a shop vac and vacuumed out the hole i drilled. Applied some tap it lube to the tap and tapped away. Applied some anti seize to the 1/8th fitting and tightened it up on on the manifold then put the probe in. started the truck and let it idle for 30 minutes with no load to assure that the shaving blew out the exhaust. You may say its over kill but id rather be safe then sorry

I greased mine and nothing happened to it. But just fyi they said it happens a lot. Another question what types of readings do you get at that location? I have mine in the same spot.
