To my knowledge....its on the left side of the engine, near the front.

Seems like such a bad place for a computer. Extra heat, lots of vibration, exposure to water/weather, potential for oils later in life. Seems like it would be much better in the cab under the seat or something.

Designed by Cummins to withstand all those hazards.

Every Cummins powered 18 wheeler engine has the ecm mounted on the side of the block as well, and that's a much harsher environment.

Oh I’m sure it’s fine, I can’t say I have read any threads about ECM failures. Just noting that’s the worst environment for electronics. I’m sure they spent quite a bit on the enclosure and design to tolerate it. Could put it under the seat cheaper. :wink2:

My guess is it was put on the block for easier multi-platform integration. The engine is used in a lot of products.

Every cummins along with most/many other diesels. Keeps the engine one package I guess, plus saves on wires running to the cab where the truck manufacturer would have located it.

The wiring harness and connectors will degrade quicker then the ECM will in most cases.
