I've searched all over this site and can't find an answer so here goes with a new thread... About 2 months ago I did the DPF delete with Smarty Jr, about 2 weeks later I noticed my EB "screetching" when slowing down off the highway or when towing.. It doesn't do it when driving around town with EB on, only when theres a lot of strain on slowing.. Sometimes when it does this if I get back on the accelerator hard it will do it while accelerating which leads me to think it's turbo related or an exhaust leak.. I've looked all over and can't find an exhaust leak, but that's really what it sounds like... Sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard almost.... Can anyone give me any pointers on what I need to look for next ?

I hope it's noisy, or you did something wrong. Anybody know how I can make my jake brake louder, besides taking out the foam insert from the intake?
When "Mabel's" warming up, with the engine brake on, it sounds like a Harrier jet getting ready to do a vertical lift off!

Its not a jake brake, it is an exhaust brake. I like the jet engine sound though!
As far the the OPs question, I am not sure on that one. I have never heard that noise before.

Yeah chief, Sounds good. I remember seeing a jake brake badge on a 2003 5.9 dually. Sorry if I'm ig'nint. don't know the difference.....
Deer123, you'll hear the turbo nice when the EB comes on, if it's an exhaust leak (sometimes you get them with clamped on down pipes) it'll be hissing a little. Stock muffler hisses a little too.
Muffler shop will weld/take off clamps for 50-100$. No leaks......

I'm not sure if I understand what you're hearing, but turbo "whistle" under acceleration is normal. Exhaust whistle with the EB on at idle is normal, turbo whistle while decelerating is normal. Screeching at any time is not. Maybe a bearing going out?

what he is hearing is the same noise i hear, i had flo pro and when the switch is on for the engine brake it sounds like a jet engine it changes alot depending on temperature,i have switched my exhaust again to mbrp full stainless with muffler and what a difference in tones and the jet engine effects is twice as loud and a really conversation starter lol.
No, this isn't a "normal" whistle from the turbo... I know what that sound is, on a cold morning with high idle and eb on I hear that sound and used to without the deletes it was normal when eb was on and I'd hear it whistle too.. This sounds like fingernails going across the chalkboard !! I did look around over the weekend and found there's a plastic tube going from my airbox into the turbo, where it goes down and makes a 45 degree turn, on the back side underneath of that tube I felt around and ended up with a bunch of black soot on my hands... I was checking all of the clamps around the turbo to find an exhaust leak and that's when I noticed this... Is this soot a sign of an exhaust leak ? And sorry if I'm not making sense of exactly where I'm finding this, but to me it seems like this is "pre" turbo so not sure why there's soot.. But correct me if I'm wrong, but this black soot I'm finding IS a sign of an exhaust leak right ?

Your Turbo might be caked with carbon and crud, from the congestion from before the delete.
I was actually going to ask one of the vets here, is it a good idea to take the turbo off and see if it needs to be cleaned up inside?

At first what I did since its a 6spd I would open it up on highway like 80 in fifth with th eb on and let it slow you down to like 20 or so and do it a few more times. It helped for a few weeks but since I do a lot of city driving temps don't get high enough to burn that crap out

If it's making a loud screech when slowing down with the E-brake on, the cause is most likely an exhaust leak. If your EGR cooler is still intact, check the bolts holding it to the exhaust manifold. It's not uncommon for them to back out causing the leaking exhaust to screech as it escapes. Also check the exhaust manifold gaskets, the gasket between the turbo and the exhaust manifold and all exhaust system clamps.
I have mine straight piped from the turbo back and everything deleted,and I'm running the Smarty JR. Mine has made the same noise you describe but mine is more of a "whistle" sound rather than a "screech",as far as a noise when accelerating my turbo will whistle louder due to the open airaid system I have.When coming to a stop using the exhaust brake it will make that noise,but if I have the tow-haul mode on it becomes more deeper for some reason.

This sounds more or less normal to me. When towing my 9,000 lb trailer, with EB and tow/hall on, my truck's EB sounds much louder and the turbo whistle is much more pronounced than when unhooked and Tow/Hall off. I use the EB all the time.
Although I ran the stock air box with a 4" hole cut in the bottom and a gutted air tube for 90,000 +/- KMs, I have been running an S&B CAI for almost 50,000 KMs. The sound from both the S&B and the modded stock air box are about the same.

My makes a very noticeable squeech sound with the EB on as I drop off the fuel too. It almost sounds like running compressed air across a big wheel bearing - almost like the turbo is over-reving.
I'll be checking this week for the turbo gasket leaking.
I'm running the diamond eye down & delete pipes - and I do think I have a leak at the joining flange.
If I understand how the EB works (always suspect), when the vane chokes down, doesn't it increase pressue in the exaust manifold? If true - the turbo-manifold or manifold-head gaskets should be the biggest suspects.
The EB is the first thing I turn on in the truck over its 19k mile life
