Yet another problem in my low quality truck with the legendary motor.

Coming home today I went to back into the driveway and the shift lever moves but the trans will not come out of drive. After messing with for a while with my foot on the brake, The shift lever moves freely without any pressure on the brake. Their is no notches when moving the lever all over the dash. I'm thinking this is a good thing because it is not my transmission, but a pin or something broke in the shift linkage.

Has anyone else had any problems with this type of think. Im a ford guy so I know nothing about a dodge. Where would I be checking for the shift linkage?

Any help would be appreciated.

Check at the steering column under the hood. There's a linkage there. SHUT IT OFF WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SET!!!! Check underneath the column too going to tranny.

It's shut off with wheel chocks. Only problem is that it won't start now because its in drive! Hopefully I can get this fixed and its not a serious transmission issue. The truck only has 60,000 miles! I remember when it broke as well if this helps anything. I had just put it in 4x4 and then put it in reverse. It made a little noise when I put it in reverse. Then switche to drive and it never came out if drive.

Look underneath at the tranny. Driver side. The linkage that comes out of the side of the tranny to the valve body there's a lever with linkage on it. PUSH the lever forward until it stops. That should be PARK.
If its not in PARK. PULL lever back. You may have to Unhook linkage at the lever.

There's also a steel block that has two linkages with a bolt on the side. Sometimes that bolt comes loose causing your problems. Something else to check out.

Perfect! thank you guys!

Right at the valve body this thing was apart. I was able to fiddle with it and get it back together but I need to find the "clip thingy" that holds it together. I can drive it for now, but after some bumps, I will probably need to reconnect it.

Anyone know what the clip that holds it on is called? I guess I will probably need to buy that from a dealer?

Mine has a hole with a cotter and a washer. Is it possible it sheared off and the hole is filled with the reminants of the old pin? Or maybe mine came apart and someone else devised the better fix?

remove the arm, and drill a hole then instal a washer and a cotter pin....
even if it had some other means of locking the arm in place, it could not have been a good design seeing as its missing.
