Just purchased a used ecm for my 1999 dodge cummins 2500 auto 4x4...it came out of a 1999 3500 auto....i tried to just take the ecm to local dodge dealers to have vin and mileage flashed in it. First one said he needed the whole truck....not able to...second idiot said i cant do this that all ecms must come new and flashed with truck vin and cant be changed...so i would have to buy new from him....first off...can i try this ecm on my truck or will it hurt anything.....i read somewhere if vin doesnt match pcm vin it will shutdown...second is there a good place to send this ecm to get it flashed....?? Im havin nooooo luck with idiot dealers near pensacola florida.....thanks jeff

im not sure, if it was me though id hook it up and try it.... worst case senario you gotta buy one through the dealer.... and then you have it flashed anyway. ideally i would have gotten its pcm too.....

i had an ecm go kaput on a 1998 durango once, went to the bone yard, got another from a similarly optioned truck, bolted it in and ran it for 6 months till the wife got smacked head on one night.....

so it might just swap....

I've swapped in a couple of wrecking yard ecms in my 01 in the past and had no problems. Even swapped a pcm at one point. I just made sure the part numbers matched. Vin and mileage make no difference. My problem is why I keep blowing them.

Just found a used ecm on wed. to replace the one that died at the end of summer. I will for sure be checking for AC before this one goes back in. I'll start my own thread about my ecm problems so as not to hijack this one.

AC=alternating current. A bad alternator can produce harmful amounts of AC current which can lead to ECM failure.

Oh ok thanks.....after i saw that i read up and saw moparmans video...u know that might explain ALOT of my troubles...my ecm has slowly went down hill for a couple of years....first it fried the electronics on 3 new vp44s when i had a juice attitude on it....finally i gave up and sold the juice because i couldnt afford new pumps....then the wait to start started acting funny and would take forever to come on....then the lift pump power quit from ecm...i simply added a 12volt supply....then it finally got where it would be running or idling then start surging and finally die and the wait to start wouldnt come on till u let it sit for an hour....been a head scratcher...maybe the alternator ac voltage caused all this...im puttin on a new alternator before i put the ecm on
