I'm getting 12.75 volts on the battery with the truck off. At idle I'm getting 12.9volts. I'm getting the same voltage off the back of the alternator, crossed to the negative terminal on the battery.

Should I be testing anything else? I'm guessing I need a new alternator.

pull the alt and have it tested. It is likely that the alt is on its way out, but could also be a million other things.

I feel a little dumb - but how do you get the serp belt off. I can't figure out how to release the tension on the tensioner.

1/2 in raker bar in the square hole of the tensioner, then push it in enough to slide it off.

I put a new alternator in today - thanks for the help with the tensioner. Its pushing 13.8v, steady. Why are some guys getting 14.7v? What is the optimum range - just curios.

possibly a bad regulator yours is where it should be if it pushes more you can overcharge your batterys and cause them to fail prematurely
