If you have a VE pump you need a timing cover with the VE bolt pattern, if you have a p pump you need the bolt pattern for the p pump. So for a 93 you would need a 1st gen cover for the VE pump. good used VE covers are alot more common than used P7100 covers. Lucky you! Get searchin on ebay.

Im just fiishing up replacing mine just waitin on my cam from hamilton to come in so i can start puttin in back together, its not bad at all just time consuming. If you choose to pull the cam the wooden dowel rods work pretty slick.

im new with deisels and new here too, thx for the info. but unfortunately i have the hard to find p7100 housing. i found the VE housing on ebay for cheap and was hoping i could use that, apparently not. so it looks like i got to drop almost 300 for a new one and get to work. i was also thinking of pulling the cam gear instead of the whole cam, anybody recomend one over the other? i havent purchased the truck yet, i just wanted to do a little homework and see what i was up against. im still pretty sure im gonna get the truck and learn to love my 12v.

If you took your truck to Cummins to have the case replaced and asked them to pull the cam they would laugh and tell you to take it somewhere else.
Pulling the gear is way easier even if you have to go buy a toaster oven and some welding gloves.

thx again for the helpful info. i already love this site, you guys dont flame newbs for asking q's. i was reading the cam gear removal thread and was wondering how critical isthe back support on the cam when you reinstall the gear. i wasnt planning on having to use teamwork as to not punch out the back cam cover. is using the prybar on the back of the cam critical or just being extra cautious? and if somebody has a timing case for sale, please let me know.
in case anybody was wondering, im looking at buying a 70's Ford F250 crewcab 4x4 with a Cummins transplant from a 97 12V.

Very critical.
If the cam moves backwards while reinstalling the gear and pushes out the rear cam plug you will have to pull the engine to pound it back in.

Spoke with mechanic who said it takes a good bit of force to push out that plug. If it can be pushed on by hand looks it would be ok. I have thought about using a can of co2 to shrink cam before putting the gear on! But would the temp change cause it to crack from cold to hot so fast?

If another person to hold the cam while pushing the gear back on is a problem it wouldn't take too much effort to jam a bar in the cam after removing the lift pump and somehow prop or tie it so it wouldn't move.
Your mechanic is right, it would take a bit of effort to push the plug out.
Most likely it would happen if you only had a hair more to go getting the gear all the way on and had to beat on it with a hammer.
There was one fellow who posted here that said he did pop his plug out and had to pull the engine so so guess it can happen.
I've used the method several times and hardly had to even pound the gear to get it back on. CO2 isn't necessary but wouldn't hurt.
