DIY trans upgrade?

1495 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  97trxuszj
So I took the first step and ordered the Edge JWA, but I'm just really itching to get a turbo and some injectors in there too. Not sure on the turbo setup at the moment but it would be something that will support 7x.010s.

My question is, to support that amount of power, what will I need to do to the trans other than a TC and Valve body? If possible I'd like to try and do it myself but have never messed with a trans before.

Thanks!

Also any recommendations on specific brands/models you guys have had luck with is greatly appreciated!
If you have not ever worked on a tranny before then the only upgrades you can do by yourself are proly just that. TC and valve body. Unless you are a genius or have a good friend that has extensive experience rebuilding then you would be better off just having a pro rebuild your tranny. It doesn't take much over stock HP to trash a 47re
If you have a bit of mechanical know how and a tool set you can rebuild the trans yourself.
I did mine and I knew nothing about 47re's. There's no end to the info here if you get stuck. Clean work surface and be sure to lay out all the parts exactly as they come of of the trans and you can't go wrong. Getting the darn thing out of the truck is a bigger job then actually rebuilding it.
Other than Gorend, does anyone else have someone to recommend?

TRE Diesel or Firepunk. I personally am going with TRE once I get the $5500ish together for a trans (flexplate, triple disk, input, and output).

Hope this helps.
Im interested in this as well... My plans was to do the shift kit and the other things that require just dropping the pan.

And then ride it till it burns the torque convertor or anything else. (I have 2 vehicles so just get it towed home if Im stranded or park it and buy the parts).

If I am not mistaken all it will do is possible destroy the clutches inside and burn up the torque convertor and not damage anything else (of course there is probably a limit to this based on amount of power, but with a edge comp cts)

Just my 2 cents of what I am planning on doing when I get my edge.

Could snap a shaft. I blew my front pump seal on Thursday and now truck is useless.

I guess there are a bunch more things that can go wrong. Just going off what I have heard from other guys and the TC typically starts slipping and thats when you know you need to do some work.

I did find this a little while ago. Ignore the fact that its in the 3rd gen section but its for the 47re/48re so its got us covered!

I'm in the UP, tell me about a diesel trans builder close haha.

TRE offers install OR shipping in his prices.
I have a twintubo Nissan that would blow the trans out and even one that was supposed to be bullit proof. I ended up building the trans never built one but watched a couple put together. I used a Precsion triple kevlar disk torque converter in it and noticed that they have the torque converter, flexplate, and upgrade input shart for the cummins transmission. They're out of Tenn. Great guys to talk to. Torque converter has a 2 year warranty ( or did the last time I spoke to them).

Yeah, if you think you can tackle that then get kickin chicken. Not for me, I've already done a few things to my rig, but I don't have the time nor patience for that right now. But that is a nice thread:thumbsup:
An upgraded valvebody to hold more line pressure and a triple disk torque conv. And a standard rebuild will actually hold up to a fair amount of abuse. By no means is it a full billet unit, but it will surpass a stocker.

And normally when a torque conv. Dies it takes out the rest of the trans.
