hey guys

I have a 2013 with 118k miles on it

I was driving my truck and the Service DEF system message came up. Now my power seems to have been derated and my exhaust brake doesn't seem to be working. If im rolling at 10 mph trying to get on the freeway it takes about 1 mile to get to freeway speed now.

Has anyone had this issue? What ended up being the issue and cost?

Could be as simple as bad def, plugged nozzle. Could be bad injector or bad pump. The Code or Codes are.....?

so I just took the truck to the dealership and the service writer said it has a Turbo and ECM code that its throwing and mostly likely its going to be the turbo actuator which costs $3600

Im hoping that it ends up being something minor but I think Im ready to upgrade to a 3rd gen

Guessing your derated power is due to barely, if at all, functioning/spooling turbo. Exhaust brake is the actuator. Chances are it's shot. 2nd gen swap if you want to delete and tune. Or just drop in a replacement if you want to leave it stock.

thanks for the explanation, thats not good news

The boost gauge showed it was making I believe 18 psi of boost
The exhaust brake hasnt been working since the service DEF system light went on but today it seemed to be working a little bit

The other issue is the motor has been using coolant Ive filled it up with 1.5 gallons within the past 2 weeks

do you have some links to the 2nd gen swap kits?

also do I have to delete both EGR and DPF to do the 2nd gen swap?

Actuator does everything from allowing the turbo to build boost by varying the vanes on the sliding collar, to position the vanes when EGR is active and for the EB.

Yes and yes along with tuning. Lots of threads with 2nd and 3rd gen swaps. You will loose your EB at this time but can add an inline one if desired.

2nd gen swap kits - I would recommend Stainless Diesel - 2G SINGLE SWAP KITS

EGR and DPF delete, YES. Tuner, YES

As for as EB, I have a BD and it works great. https://www.dieselperformance.com/shop/category/dodge-6-7l-cummins-07-5-18-exhaust-brakes-100270

Hope this all helps.

Keep in mind you could always just drop in a stock replacement. Really depends on your wallet and end goals. Best of luck. Cheers.

thanks for the recommendations, I have had a BD exhaust brake on my old truck as well and it was very effective

sadly I had the stock actuator replaced because I needed to get the truck up and running quickly I would love to do a 2nd swap though :spank:

I got the truck back yesterday and the coolant was low they topped it off, today I go to start the truck and the coolant light is on
I top it off, 15 mins later the coolant light goes on so I top it off again. I call the dealer and they're saying its the EGR cooler thats leaking
