I have a 2014 cummins with 42,000 miles on it, now in the shop for the 4th time for DEF related problems. Check engine light comes on and a message displays check DEF system see dealer, then it will say 150 miles until speed limited to 5mph. Am I the only one having this many problems with the DEF system?
I've got a '14 with 42,000 miles, as well. Fortunately, I haven't had any def problems at all, so far. I had a couple CEL's for NoX sensor about a year ago, I cleared one myself and theater cleared on its own. I've only used terra Clair brand def in 2.5 gal jugs, since new. I don't completely fill during the winter months to allow room if it freezes.
Do you live in an very hot or cold climate? Store the extra def in the heat? I think there were some updates for the def dosing module(?) last year.

Yea I could delete it, but would lose warranty. I live in SD so climate varies all the time. It doesn't use much def unless I'm pulling. But I'll pull my 30 ft enclosed snowmobile trailer 1600-2000 miles on one trip out west. I shouldn't have to be worried driving that far hoping that the check engine light doesn't come on and it go into limp mode. It ruined a trip this weekend and had to waste a half a day turning around and going back home to get my buddies duramax...
Code reader will also atleast give you an idea of what to look up and possibly give the dealer the answer on how to fix it. Sometimes they need a little nudge in the right direction.
My dealer blamed my dpf issues on non mopar def, not cover under warranty to flush and clean the def injector at 20000, it makes me wonder why the truck went into limp mode all def is the same. Not gona deal with emisions gona delete Thursday sorry to rant just angry with the emissions on the trucks now

My dealer blamed my dpf issues on non Mopar DEF and that it was not covered under warranty. Sounds familiar woodsrider77. They wanted 400 bucks to drain the def tank. I did it myself.
Did you guys show them your diesel supplement when they pulled that no warranty stuff on ya?
Diesel Exhaust
Fluid
MOPAR® Diesel Exhaust Fluid (API Certified) (DEF) or equivalent that has been API Certified to the ISO 22241 standard. Use of fluids not API Certified to ISO 22241 may result in system damage. You can receive assistance in locating DEF in the United States by calling 866-RAMINFO (866-726-4636). In Canada call 1–800–465–2001 (English) or 1–800–387–9983 (French)
I had a '13 as a work truck. Put 130k on it in a year, never a single def problem. Another guy I worked with got a '13 at the same time and only put about 60k on his and had a lot of problems with the def system. The only difference between me driving more was I never let the def tank get below half. He would get his to empty all the time

That's odd. My philosophy was to run mine into the "refill DEF soon / countdown to de-rate" message as often as possible, thus insuring every fillup would have the most amount of freshest DEF. ZERO DEF / emissions problems since day one.
On a side note, my truck just hit it's 2nd birthday.
Today, February 20th, marks the second birthday of The Radio Flyer.
Short of what has been previously mentioned in this thread, no new problems are present.....
135,064.1 miles with ZERO CEL's (except during transmission sump filter replacements)
209 idle hours
2,522 drive hours
53.6 average miles per hour
Some interesting fuelly stats :
10,010.3 gallons consumed
$30,023.27 dollars spent
13.5 lifetime average miles per gallon
19.8 highest average miles per gallon
$0.222 lifetime average cents per mile in fuel only
353 fuel ups
Some more info I track :
209.618 gallons of DEF consumed
$627.71 in DEF expenditures
643.95 average miles per gallon of DEF
It costs me $4.65 per 1,000 miles in DEF costs
It appears my DEF consumption is almost dead-nuts on to what Cummins originally states---2.09%
A soon as its out of warranty delete that . You will be much happier. You should keep everything they take off. I heard from a truck dealer that EPA is trying to get a law passed that you cant sell a vehicle that has been deleted.
Thats why when i traded my 11 in , it came with a bed full of parts. They reassemble all the parts i removed. .and returned all my parts they took off less 1 rear block off plate. .
I my case with my 16 i will drive it less than 10k a year ,,... what's that mean "clogged DEF Injector and crystallized fluid in the tank. I am not interested in having that issue k as others before me ...
I wonder if dealers would even have the equipment to tell if you were using mopar DEF or another brand. It might not be a bad idea buy some of the mopar stuff and keep a half a bottle on hand. If you start having issues and the dealer wants to blame the def, whip out the half filled jug and say this is all I use.
Now that you mention receipt, I'm going to change my strategy. If I ever throw a DFP related code, I'll stop at my dealer and buy a fresh jug then call them the next day and schedule a service appointment. I can turn the tables on them and say WTF, I think you sold me bad DEF!
I thought there was a law that if a manufacture required you to use their fluid they had to provide it for free.?? It's in one of the other def issues threads..
I've heard horror stories about walmart def, I had some but returned it and got some blue. I would use truck stop bulk but I'm about 60 miles from the nearest truck stop. So far no issues in 20k miles.
Is it possible to register a deleted truck in a smog check state? As more and more states and areas require smog checks for registration that could be a problem down the road. It would be interesting to see a map showing the diesel smog check areas. As the years go by and the warranties fall away and the smog devices fail and the smog check areas grow, things could get very interesting.
Just a year ago, Texas changed the way registration and vehicle inspections are handled. They have combined the registration and inspection so that only one sticker is used instead of a separate registration and inspection sticker. What you have to do now is get the vehicle inspected first, the inspector gives you the paperwork showing that your vehicle passed safety and emissions(if required), you then show this to the clerk in the tax office and you get your registration/inspection sticker.
So, in Texas, you have to pass emissions before you can register the vehicle, if the vehicle is required to have operating emissions on it.
Currently, Texas isn't doing emissions on diesels, or on vehicles that are over 24 model years old.

In Cal the reg renewal is sent with a smog required note on it every two years starting from new. The truck is inspected with an OBD port plug in and visual inspection and the report is sent instantly to the state, pass or fail and the OBD port identifies the truck with the VIN so no testing the wrong truck happens. Then you can go get your tags. If there is a way to get around the system I sure don't know what it would be. The inspection costs $50 and takes about 10 min.
Cal is also looking at tax per mile. That monster will be fun. I would much rather see a gas tax increase so everybody pays.
So, just took my 2014 2500 in for routine service and a week later threw a DEF code. I'm guessing they did a software update that caused this but I have no idea and the dealer wasn't offering to say. It's the 3rd DEF issue I've had in 2 years but the first in almost a year. I did find out that the DEF system is covered under the 5/100K warranty rather than the 3/36, so I suppose I should be thankful for that. I just can't believe they can't get this right. I have no desire to delete but on the other hand Ram needs to get this system figured out.
But, only a relative few are having any issues. Like has been said many times, you only hear and see reports of the people with issues, nobody posts very often when they don't.
