Hello all, new to the diesel thing here have a quick question. The Diesel mechanic at the Dealership is telling me to use a quality DEF when I fill it up. What are some of the quality brands? I can't seem to find anything on my google search. Thanks in advance for the replies.

Ive been running Peak purchased from Autozone/ Napa, etc. Any of the big names (Peak, Valvoline ect) should be fine, just look on the label to see that it meets the ISO spec.

The biggest concern is keeping the fluid clean while filling the tank. I consider a dedicated funnel as a must have, and while I haven't heard of any going bad, there is a consensus that the shelf life of a bottle is one year. It does freeze at some point, around 12 deg. F iirc, so take that into consideration while storing a new bottle.

Some of the bigger (2.5 gallon) jugs seem to come with a pour spout, but the one gallon bottles i use do not. Flo-tool makes a inexpensive funnel with a nice narrow spout that is perfect for the small filler neck opening. Its sold as a multi use funnel, but it's blue just like the DEF fill. I keep mine in a gallon ziploc in my truck box so it stays very clean.

Prices vary a bit but not too much. Ive heard of it around $2.60 a gallon at the pump, though I dont have that option around here. It sells retail for around $7.00 a gallon.

What about at the pumps? The truck stops I've been too have def from a nozzle like the diesel. Also, how much does a 3500 hold. Thanks
A 3500 holds 5.5 gallons IIRC.

All I've ever bought is truck stop DEF from the pump. I believe the brand is Blue or Peak.

Walmart sells Peak Blue Def in the 2.5 gal jug for about $12. It's very convenient and I'm a little lazy in my retirement life. The same jug is about $15 at a Love's truck stop.

Peak is all I've seen in the 2.5 gallons. I saw some unknown brands in a gallon size. I've also bought at the truck stop. Haven't had an issue with either.

A plastic gas container works good for filling up at the truck stop. Much sturdier and more reusable than the empty Peak container. I only carry spare fluid if I know I'm going to need some on the trip. Most times, I can round trip without add DEF.

We decided to start selling our own. We will be marketing it under the name RamGunner Super Yellow. Our slogan will be - "With yellow you KNOW it has urea in it."

Quantities will be limited, so order now. Allsalesarefuinalasisnowarrantynotresponsibleforexplosionsfiresoranyotherbadthings. :cheeky004:

On a more serious note - the Peak at WalMart has worked well. Save the jugs and at least one of the nozzles. Refill them at a truck stop when you happen to drive past one.

I topped mine off at a truck stop pump in September, cost was $1.89 a gallon. I was impressed with the way the nozzle lived behind a plexiglass door which automatically opened when you pay and close when you replace the nozzle.
The top of the pump had a Peak logo insert, so I'm assuming that's what it was. Regardless, I've never had a CEL caused by it and it's still at the full mark about two months and roughly 1400 miles later...

Have any of you run the def low until the EVIC warnings come on? I've tried once, had the gauge down to below 1/4 then had a camping trip coming up and went ahead and filled it.

In the year I've owned my truck, I've never filled it anywhere but the pumps at truck stops. There's just no way I'm going to bother going somewhere to buy it, store it at home, and funnel it into the tank when there's the convenience of a pump everywhere I go.

Be careful with that jug. The jug is intended for 1 time use and is paper thin and I haven't had one yet that didn't have a drip drip drip from the threads. On the side of the box it said not to take it out of the box. ha, that's how cheap it is.

I'd recommend spend $5 and get a gasoline quality jug. If you do reuse the jug, you'd better keep it protected in the bed of the truck as you may find a bed full of urea if something nicks it. I think a milk jug is thicker.
