I found the Spicer manual in digital form online and down loaded it for nothing. The manufacurer's own documentation is almost always the best. The Dodge factory serice manual is also a good choice, very good documentation on the axles and pretty much everything else you need to know about repairing your truck, all in one book.

If you can't find the Spicer manual let me know and I can send it to you when I'm at the putor it's on.

My Scout would eat pinion gears on a regular basis so I've become comfortable with the process and can offer some advice:
-Grind the ID of your old main bearings until they slide on and off your carrier and use these as setup bearings for dialing in your shim packs. This is way easier than pressing on and off new bearings and potentially damaging the new bearing cages in the process.
-I recommend buying, fabricating, or renting the housing spreader. I know lots of people do without it but I don't recommend it.
-Hopefully your new R&P will have etched numbers to use for setting pinion depth. If for some reason you have to set the pinion depth don't assume the main bearing landings can be used to locate the axle centerline - they are not located at the axle centerline. This is a shortcut I once attempted so trust me on this. Use the setup shown in the manual.
