Daily driver feasibility

I've found a 2007 2500 SLT with 157,000 on the odometer. 4 doors, 4x4, no rust, auto transmission $27,000. Body and interior look to be in pretty good shape. Has the following mods on it. Curious if with these mods can this truck still be a friendly daily driver. Thinking about buying it for my kid to drive on the daily. I have 0 experience with diesels. I understand the 2007 is the last year of the generation. Thanks for any inputs.

Does it have a built transmission?
Not sure yet. I've emailed the dealer with that question, not heard back yet. Getting in and starting to read on these forums it sounds like unless the transmission has been upgraded it's a ticking bomb???
Post up a link to the truck...

I hope your "kid" is over 40 with career, family and kids and not 16... :)

Yeah the 48re can't take much hp over stock. If you're really interested in the truck take it to an experienced diesel mechanic and have them do a complete inspection of everything.

Trucks that are modified heavily that aren't done right can be a financial nightmare. When I bought my truck I tried to find the least modified stock babied truck I could find. If it had a tuner on the truck I didn't buy it.

One more note I see it had a 5th wheel ball in the bed take that into consideration too.

Looks like they spent some good money on quality parts. I always treat it this way "the parts are only as good as the installer". Hopefully previous owner had a reputable shop doing the work or he himself did a quality install. It is very easy to make HP on these trucks and very easy to create problems because of the extra HP.

Depending on the tunes loaded onto the smarty touch, that truck most likely makes in the neighborhood of 600 horsepower at the wheels.
I don't know about you, but there is absolutely no way I'm buying my teenage son anything that makes that kind of power.
I remember vividly how I drove at a young age, all I can say is I must have a guardian angel that likes me.

If it is for a kid, I wouldn't buy it. Just my opinion...

Especially if the youngster knows nothing about egt's or diesels in general and just keeps ripping on it with no regard, better get ready to open the wallet

So many red flags, hard pass for me. Sounds like problem after problem. Not to mention the normal wear and tear parts at 150k, no mention was made for ball joints, u joints, steering, shocks, box, leaks, breaks… sounds like a money pit

however, non trump the price. 27k for a 07? Yea HELL NO. LMAO, fool and his money right?

Have you priced new or used trucks lately? That price is actually pretty good considering mileage and shape of the truck. Mods only add to the right buyer, but based on mileage and shape alone that’s right inline with what those trucks go for in that region.

Clean 3rd gens are bringing insane money. Trucks with under 100k are selling all day for 35-45k depending on what part of the country you live in and their condition. Look what dealers like gateway car country and New Jersey truck king are getting for trucks.

Just because other trucks are prices crazy high doesn't mean its ok to spend that. Prices on used trucks is cooling fast to I a seeing them go in the low 20k range around me latly, and they sell very fast too. While the over priced trucks seem sit forevr. Especially at those shady dealers, they polish up the poop, take nice pictures and list high waiting for a sucker.

Not to mention the truck in question itself. If it was stock (or closer to), maybe a little lower milage, then maybe, just maybe $27k would make sense. But that bucket of problems, hell no.

Putting prices with the mods is a big red flag for me. I don’t care what they spent on them. Generally, people listing the prices of the mods are trying to recoup the money they spent. Also, a lot of stuff is missing from the mod list, especially the transmission. Seems like previous owner was just interested in making peak HP without any regard to anything else.

Needs more Armour all on it under the hood for that price. Got enough on the sidewalls though.

I know guys who purposely put those fender flares on to hide rust. Looks clean, but I'd be very hesitant to spend that kind of money for a truck knowing nothing about the transmission wiht those mods (as stated above).

There will be some maintenance. It could be just fine, Depends a lot on how he drives and how you have taught him to respect a vehicle, and not drive it like a hot rod Honda. If he is going to drive it like a Honda, don't do it.
PS, remind him stopping distance is more than a car.
If you have zero experience with diesels and you want to buy your son a Cummins it would worry me. It’s an older truck, you’re gonna have a lot of maintenance in general. You’re gonna have problems with the truck at some point down the line. If you’re mechanically inclined you can save a lot of money and fix some problems yourself. Also the price seems pretty steep. I sold my 2016 with 120xxx miles on it last year for $30,000. Check for blow by. Run it hard when you test drive it. Look for leaks. Good luck.

Lots of help here for that, so long as you can afford parts and tools.
The other big thing I’d want to see, especially for a modded truck is documentation - purchase receipts, maintenance records, dates of install, etc. Too many dishonest people and too many guys who don’t take care of their stuff. I can’t tell you how many sellers over the years have told me that they changed oil every 4k or 5k miles and don’t have one shred of evidence to prove it. A “built trans” doesn’t mean crap (to me) without a receipt showing what parts, who built it, when the work was done and the mileage.
