cut bed sides

hey guys, i was wheeling the other day and came off a pretty decent size ledge. crumpled my bumper pretty good, so i just ripped it off and screwed my license plate and light onto the back of the bed. but, i think it looks pretty goofy right now. i have a bed stiffner in the bed and went ahead and took off the tailgate.. but, ive been thinking about cutting off the bottom of bed. i just dont want to hack up my $1,000 paint job if it doesnt look good. any opinions on what i could do to make look better? and bumper designs i could steal to make it look better.

also, what do you think of the stiffener? :confused013:

I need to cut my fenders too, I just haven't got around to it. Just lay it out with some masking tape and go at it with a cutoff wheel.
Its been done before. Do an image search and you should see some results of other's work before you commit. I know of a couple 3rd gen's with it that look pretty good, but haven't seen it on a second gen.
i have seen it on my buddies second gen, but it was a short bed. i am not too sure how it would look on a long bed. i think i have decided to put on a roll pan, a hidden hitch behind the license plate, and maybe some body guards, or a rear skid plate, something to not let this happen again haha
Rhino, let me know how it comes out. you have a mega right?
Cut bedsides always look badas$$! The key is to make the angle too steep. If it's more on the shallow side, it doesn't look goofy. I've done it to all of my trucks and love the look and extra ground clearance. Had to make my own bumpers and hitches but that's just part of the game. Get some tape out and mock up some lines, stand back and take a look. Better yet, grab some photos and photoshop them!

i got bored yesterday so i came to shop with some measurements and designed this guy, the 1/4" end caps would slide between the ends of the bed. and tonight ill cruntch some numbers to see how much force that 1/4"wall 2" DOM can candle without bending so i can figure out the biggest trailer i can haul with this setup.. ive thought about beefing up the frame mounts, but i am not too sure how without having to box them. any opinions on it?

I would design the bumper mounts to box around the factory frame

i might, i thought about boxing in the frame and having another mounting point down closer to the hitch
I don't know if it's the way the drawing is coming up on the screen, but it looks like that design will hang down lower than the bed sides you are trimming up.
Going to be doing the same thing to mine shortly, I found that I now have to much travel from all the new Carli parts! :party018: My buddies shop used a plasma torch to cut out the fenders on my yota. I am hoping to achieve a similar look/functionality with my Dodge. We glued in some weather stripping to keep the new cut from rubbing.
