Time to pick your brains a bit...

I've been working on figuring out the Cummins programming for a while, and now that I've figured out enough to be able to start tuning my own truck, I'd like to see how much interest there is in a system that would allow you to do your own modifications to the truck's programming. This would be similar to the EFILive stuff the Duramax crowd has, but limited by the capabilities of the vp44 - I don't think there is any more horsepower available than any other product out there that does not tap the pump wire.

In its simplest form, the product could consist of the editor software, the download software, and the USB cable to connect the PC/laptop to the truck's OBD connector.

A more complex approach would be to create a handheld 'box' that you transfer your custom file to, and the box would plug into the OBD connector to download the file to the truck.

Please be aware that this setup would ONLY be for engine tuning, it is not capable of doing anything in the PCM (ABS, tire size, etc.)

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'd LOVE it. Only question though is how much power can you get out of it? Also, IIRC, TST used to do custom programming on the cummins ECM and cummins sued them or something.

They were using Cummins software to do the programming. What I did is write my own downloader program, and my own definitions file that works with an existing, freely-available, ECU editor program.

What this product would provide:

1. A way for the end-user to take a stock software file and patch it using the output of the ECU editor.
2. A way to download the resulting file to their truck's computer.

The stock software files are available from many sources, and it's not illegal for me to give someone instructions or tools to modify their own file that they obtained from wherever.

As far as how much power you could get out of it, well, without stacking a box that taps the pump wire, it would probably be the same as any other non-pump-wire-tapping box.

this would be such a sweet idea....and at a reasonable price just from some of the parts you listed:peelout i'm definitley game if you're gonna do it...i love technology and any chance i get to just tinker around with it, i'm there:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

I had a programmable ecu in my sold turbo rsx-s, that allowed you to reprogram the ecu and datalog sensors through a usb cable to your labtop. Power gains when programming on the dyno were huge. Hopfully there is somthing like that out there.

That's the general idea, but you won't see huge gains here. +65hp is the max you can get out of timing/fuel modifications without tapping the VP.

That is correct. The real advantage of this is being able to adjust the base fueling and timing maps to match your particular truck's setup. If you want to stack a wire-tapping box on top of it, you'll be able to do so.

Think you have too much timing below or above a certain RPM? Change it! Too much smoke down low? Decrease the limits in the AFC map. And so on.

In the future, I may be able to figure out how to reprogram the vp44 PSG, and not have to worry about tapping the pump wire ever again.

Really intrested

i am actually really interested in this if you would send me what you have so far i could prolly make a cable for the obd port and i would use my laptop to tweak my truck as a guinea pig if you would like but i just need the software and some basic knowledge of what i going to be changing:popcorn:

i am very interested this would be very cool there is lots of thing you could change for your truck setup. most programmers and boxs are base on stock trucks and everyone has something different on there trucks.

now i know this is 2-gen stuff ,but it sounds similar to the Painless "Striker/Diesel doctor that i just seen for the thid gen rams. I think painlessperformance.com

Thanks for the replies. It looks like the initial version could be the SCI interface cable (USB port on the laptop to OBD port), and the software utilities that are needed to reflash and do data logging. The ECU editor is free software already available on the web.

Right now, all the software utilities are Linux programs. I would have to get them ported to Windows before they would be ready for distribution.

The other issue I have to figure out is how the users are going to obtain their stock flash files for modification. There are currently several sources for these.
