ok guys looking for a lil help here ...... im wanting to make a custom shifter for my truck a lil longer than stock and a lil more diameter also well im planning on heating it up so i can make the bends like in the factory stick so it clears the dash....... well i was thinkin just regular round stock then either paint or chrome dip(kinda wanted a chrome stick) ... but found some stainless .now i dont know much about stainless so im guessin that if i heat it to make the bends it will discolor right?.......... well any help at all is appreciated

Yes, if you heat stainless, it will discolor. You CAN however polish it out. I know when I tig stainless, if I take a stainless wire brush to it, all of the discoloration goes away. I'm not exactly sure how to remove it without scratching, but I'm sure it's just on the surface, so it can be polished away.

Another thought... Why heat it? Just use a conduit bender. You're gonna have to put some a$$ into it compared to malleable steel, but it'll bend it. You can probably even do it with a standard hand bender (like a greenlee)

Just a thought. Then you can wrap it in tape to keep from scratching it.
