Ive been running the thought of swapping a duramax into my truck for a while now but recently decided i would rather the cummins.
Any advice is gonna help me.
Anyone done this before?
12v or 24v?
What trans would be best, could the 4l80 trans in my chev now hold up?
Would it be easier with a donor truck?
What parts would i all need?

thanks in advance for the advice.

I don't remember if anyone has done that swap or not.

It is doable, and has been done before. A 4l80 will hold up to a Cummins, and controlling it is not as bad as it could be. I put a 4l80 behind a Cummins out of a 92 dodge and really liked it, the only problem I had was I built my own adapter plate and it is slightly out so I keep breaking the flexplate. The easy fix for that is to just buy the adapter plate. With the right sensors you don't even need a standalone controller for the 4l80, it is even easier if it is drive by cable instead of drive by wire. I used a pcm out of a 2002 GM truck and reprogramed the shift points to work with the 12 valve in my truck. The necessary sensors are the engine speed sensor, throttle position sensor, and the coolant temp sensor, and of course everything currently on the transmission (and transfer case if it is 4wd).
A 24 valve would be harder to get working with the 4l80, but could probably be done.
A manual transmission is easier to swap in.
A duramax swap would probably be simpler and easier.

you must really love that particular truck to contemplate a duramax swap versus trading for one built that way.
i remember a Z71 tahoe getting a 4BT that worked well. it's documented on a few forums.
