Hey guys. I have some bumpers that I am going to throw into my truck and they are raw metal still. rather than doing black, I would like to color match them for my truck. I believe the color is flame red and the rode is PR7 I think.

anyways, Im just wondering what you guys have paid to get them color matched powdercoated, and where should I be looking to have this done? I have no idea where to even begin.. seems like local places want quite a bit.. is there a cheaper alternative?

maybe a body shop and get them just painted instead of powdercoated?

thanks.

Powder coating is significantly cheaper than painting but the color will not match as close as if you paint them. The reason it's more costly to paint is due to the prep work/priming/paint/clearcoat. Now if you have a buddy that can paint, that's the way to go. They charged me about 800 including paint to spray both of my bumpers where as it was 250 to powder coat both of them. As for where, I have no idea in your neck of the woods :confused013:

isnt powdercoating like 10x stronger than just plain ol paint though?

I looked into it, and I think it might be possible to get custom made powder made for me. I can bring that powder to a shop and get them to apply it. I am not too sure how much that costs. I think 100-200$ for a 5lb bucket.. how much powder would I need for the inside and outside of both bumpers?

maybe painting is the way to go?

one thing they said is no to go full gloss as it will show EVERY imperfection. and that semi gloss is the way to go.

It's probably a lot better way to go in terms of chipping, etc but I like color matched bumpers. So much cleaner looking. I'm just going to apply that clear sticker they use for covering the rockers on newer trucks on the areas susceptible to being damaged from rocks from my tires and call it good.

hmm. def something to think about.

if I were to paint it.. is there something like a super tough clear coat that can be applied too? and then that plastic covering sounds like a real good idea.

I like the way yours are, I want the same but in fire red!

Id do the plastic sheets before i did tons of clear that will end up dinged anyways. Doesnt Plasti-Kote have a clear coat / clear protection paint , you could try that/

Dieselnoob, are you in Edmonton? I got my Road Armor powdercoated at Powderstation in Edmonton.

The colour I got was fire engine Red! It is almost identical to flame red. If you wanna personally see how close the colours are I can meet up with u. I am really pleased with how it came out!

awesome. that does look really good. exactly what I was looking for.

now that bring up a new question... my grille. i would also like that color matched. I assume that cant be done in powdercoat... so that is definitely going to have to be done in paint right?

very nice picture. thank you very much

I think you know the answers to most of your questions. I dont believe you can powder coat plastic. I know if you prep the chrome plastic on your grill its paintable...i did mine. But if i had a disposable income id purchase the ST greyish/blackish unfinished grill and get that painted.

Search google and put powder coat and your city/state, and you should get some hits.

The powdercoat place near me has dozens and dozens of actual samples on the wall to see color and textures. So surely you can take one of those and put it next to your truck to see what would match. I've taken multiple parts to them to coat for my car, and price varies with how much prep they need to do to the part. If they have to plug, tape and sandblast the part, the price will be more than if they just had to clean it.

And, I'm sure the brand of powdercoat is going to vary in color, even though it could have the same name as "fire engine red", one could be darker than the other guys.

yeah I was able to find a place that will do it for 300$ for both as a first time tester, and if I bring them all 4 sets next time they can do them cheaper. pretty good price. I am going to do these black, and put them on for a week or 2 till they sell. then get some red ones figured out.
