Going into the purchase of my 2011 2500 ST I knew that the clutches that they put in these things were junk. Now I could use some advice/thoughts on how to proceed. This is a 4 wheel drive version if that matters to anyone and just clocked 28k.

The truck has never towed huge heavy loads. Snowmobile trailers, my CJ on a car trailer, stuff like that. I also have been driving sticks for 20 plus years so this is not a user error scenario.

Last night I was coming up a hill to home, not towing anything just simply heading up the hill. Leaned on the accelerator a bit and instead of speeding up the clutch disc slipped horribly. I had to pull the truck over to the side of the road, and then put it into the granny gear to get it moving because it would still slip by simply downshifting a gear (guessing that disc was boiling hot and could not grip till I stopped and slowed it completely). After that it seemed like it was biting like normal and I could not get it to slip again even if I laid into it.

I talked with the Dealership and they gave me the normal not covered spiel so I asked who I could escalate this to. They noted that I could work with the Owner Assistance team who I called and have a case with.

Few questions:

1. Anyone worked with that team before on a clutch issue and did they do anything towards the repair or was it just wasted time?
2. In talking with the dealership, I noted thinking about putting in an aftermarket clutch (I know there are threads on here about them) to which they noted that by doing that if there was later damage to the drivetrain they could note that it was due to the clutch. Anyone have experience there? Installed an aftermarket clutch and then had further drivetrain issues, if yes, what were the results?
3. For anyone who has had their clutch go out early, did you replace with a stocker or go with an aftermarket? What was your experiences?

Thanks in advance.

all the owners manuals/warrenty manuals say a clutch is considered wear and tear and that its not covered

definately go after market, i went with a dual disc valair organic based on towing needs and the lack of hp that i don't plan on building

Clutches are one of those things, some guys get 90k out of them others only get 20 k out of them, i think its based on driving habits myelf, but who knows

Definitely go aftermarket. I went with a southbend 3250. Great clutch for handling a lot of power but maybe a little grabby for towing. You might look at a single disk for a lot of towing.

Definitely hear you about differing driving styles. I am generally one of those that gets 90k out of a clutch so was pretty shocked to have it be going out already.

Anyone have thoughts on the best single disc?

I was checking out the south end web site the other day. If I remember correctly they had four different clutches and recommended a one of there dual disc clutches for towing as long as the HP was under 450? They also had another for those pushing 450 to 600. I could be off a little one this but I would deffinately check out there web page. I know I will revisit it when I need a clutch.
Good luck.

Spoke to Peter @ Southbend last week and we discussed my needs. He recommended his new G-56 OKHD. Good for 425 rwhp/800 tq.
The clincher was when he mentioned that 34 different drivers have been unable to tear one up yet on his factory trucks and you know once some of these guys get around the corner...He's a very pleasant, patient guy.

I don't tow, have Smarty set on sw#5,34" tires and an 1800# popup on all the time. I went into with the mindset of buying the new 3250 dd,but he's convinced the new OHD will do the job. Arrives next Wednesday here and install scheduled for the following week.

Is that the new single disk organic? I'd be very interested to hear your impressions once installed. I'm looking for a new clutch too but really like the smooth quiet stock clutch. It just doesn't hold well. I'm hoping for something that doesn't make a whole lot of noise and is a pain to drive in traffic.

10-4. It's got double the friction material of the standard one and shares the same 3250 pressure plate as the 3250 dd. It should be quiet, but chucking the dmf will result in more tranny noise.
I've got a Valeo in there right now, with smooth engagement etc. but it slips occasionally and I don't trust the quality.

Time for a new one.
I'll post my impressions after install.

I can honestly say when I upgrade it will be to one of South Bends dual disks. probably 3850. The new design has near stock pedal pressure and is as quiet as you could imagine a g56 being with a dual disk.

Any update on the new clutch?
I'm very pleased with the SBC OKHD. Smooth engagement in forward gears and just a dab more abrupt in reverse and I've only got 800 miles on it. I run Smarty on sw#3 so far and fifth will handle 80% throttle with my camper load and 34" tires fine.
So far so good.
The installer was a Dodge tech for 8 yrs and was very pleased with the quality of the product.
