I am looking for information on clutches. I'm fairly new to understanding them.

How close do you have to be to the right hp numbers? How do you know when the one you have is going out?

PO said he replaced the clutch a year before I bought the truck with a stock replacement. The clutch has always engaged when the pedal is almost all the way out, but as i read more about clutches, i understand that that is a sign of them going out. I have added a quad xzt+ and 100 hp injectors so am I overdoing it on a stock replacement? It only slips when I take off in second.

I also plan to add plenty of HP in the next couple of years - edge comp, turbo (probably twins) - so I know I will have to replace the clutch to do that. I will be using the truck as a DD but I also tow 4-6 days a week, and I'd like to be around 600hp. Is it possible to do all off the things that I want to do? I want HP, reliable towing capabilities, and a clutch easy enough for my wife to use. How soon should I replace my current clutch, and if I need to do it ASAP, I may as well add the power now and do it correctly once. I'm not opposed to spending the money needed to do it right (dual disk, upgraded hydros) but only if I need to.

Thanks for your help, my searches didn't give the answers I'm looking for.

Just my 2 cents, but if its not slipping and your not out racing or sled pulling yet run your current clutch until your ready for your power upgrades. With your question on how close you need to be with hp numbers, it depends on your driving. To get some good knowledge I would call Dan or Gary at Valair, great guys. Good luck

Thanks for your input. I think I will just be waiting then. I may get an edge or quad before the other upgrades, but that shouldn't hurt too much. I hope.

Check my sig... I'm running a SouthBend Con OFE clutch and zero issues. Towing, skidding trees, etc. Very good all round clutch.

How does it do backing up a trailer? Typical jerking?

I think you'll find adding am adrenaline will make it slip. Your better off taking your estimated power, 600, and buying a clutch that will hold that atleast. A towing dual disc is the way to go.
Will a higher hp clutch be a pain to use before the actual power comes? I'm leaning towards an edge comp for simplicity, but the quad monitor is nicer. Running an edge may mean I have to replace clutch sooner.

you need a dual disk organic clutch with upgraded hydros. they hold around 550hp to600hp if your not an idiot. its going to act the same on a stock powered truck or a highly moded truck when daily driving. they have a smooth take off and do very well backing. its something your wife will be able to drive. and you will be able to tow, back a trailer, and even 'hot rod' with it. it will take a tiny bit longer to shift then a single, but Valiar is now suggesting a bit of graphite on the input shaft to help 'lube' the movemnet of the clutch disk while shifting. they can be a little jumpy brand new but wear in nice and smooth out.

If i were you i would NOT go with a dual disk ceramic clutch. I have one and i like it but i do not tow much. when i do it can be a bit of a pain even with traction bars. even with an empty trailer I have to take off in 1st or it gets jumpy and backing a trailer is jumpy as well. of course if the clutch is complety engaged (ie. foot off the pedal) there is no jump, but going that 'fast' backing a trailer isnt always possible. Even taking of with a ceramic dual disk while not towing can be jerky, especially if you dont have traction bars. the traction bars help (and i probably need to modify mine for better control) but there is still some hop. Its not something your wife would like to drive, or you for her to drive.

I highly suggest Valair. Great clutches and great customer service. Southbend comes off as a bunch of snotty know it alls when you call.

Well I installed my edge comp and the clutch slips in settings 4 and 5 with only 50% throttle. Disappointing. I haven't and probably won't dyno it, but I think Im around 400-450 hp and 900-1000 ft/lbs, and i don't plan to add anymore fuel, only possibly a second turbo.

My question is - what are the disadvantages to a dual disk?

Is southbend worth the extra $300?

How long will the job take approximately?
