Ok, so 300k miles on the motor, thinking it is either the valves or the injection pump or injectors themselves.
It really sounds like the valves ticking, but does anyone know if the injection pump/Injectors will tick like that? The truck is all stock and starts and run fine, doesn't smoke very much unless I get on it when lugging it down a bit.
Also, does anyone know about how much a new pair of injectors would be? As far as I know the motor has never been cracked open.
Looks like I need to take it to a diesel shop and have em adjusted then, hopefully that's all it is...Almost sounds like it is coming from the IP though...
Since you said it sounds like it's coming from the IP, I'd be checking your IP gear. There have been several crack this year, and what you are describing sounds similar to what others have found. Sometimes when they crack, it's really hard to see, got to clean it up nice and you'll see the crack(s).
Where would it be cracked? Would there be any diesel leaking? There are no leaks on the engine (Oil nor Diesel), the KDP is done. I am more leaning towards the valves being bad but it sounds like the left side of the motor (IP side not Turbo).
No fuel leaking, the gear itself cracks. Sometimes it is really hard to see, sometimes its real apparent. You'll have to pull the front cover to get a good look at it, might as well pull it off the pump shaft. Try the valves first, but I'm betting on that gear having a crack. Is the tappet cover insulation still there?
