I have a 2004 dodge with the cummins of course and was wondering if anyone knows if running JP 5 would do a lot of damage to the engine or anything else in that matter or if it would be ok to run. I don't use it for long hauls or for towing a lot of weight daily.

haha i bet i know where that fuel is coming from...IIRC, jp5 and jp8 can both cause a cylinder washdown effect over time as it doesnt have the same lubricity of good 'ol #2...correct me if i'm wrong someone?

I think you are correct, jet fuel is close to kerosene. Maybe it would be O.K. with an additive, like two cycle oil?

I have been told that it will run fine, but that it has no lubricants so it will take out my fuel pump and injectors, I have been told that using "HOWES LUBRICATOR 103062 DIESEL TREAT FUEL CONDITIONER ANTI-GEL" can add enough lubrication to prevent this and a half gallon of that can be used for 150 gallons ( please correct me or let me know if I'm right)

I suggest you add 2 qt's of 2 cycle oil to every 30 gallons of jet fuel to lube the fuel system.
Instead of using 2 cycle oil, do you think that Howes stuff would be just as good if not better?

Is it JP-5 or JP-8? IIRC, JP-5 is a gasoline and kerosine derived fuel. JP-8 is solely based on kerosine, which is a diesel based fuel. As said before, it's a really "dry" fuel that provides little to no lubrication. All the military vehicles that use JP-8 are built from the factory as Multi-Fuel engines with the appropriate seals for that type of fuel. That being said, I think you would be fine running it as long as you used a 2-stroke oil or something similar.

It is JP-5, if it was JP-8 I wouldn't of second guessed it at all and would of ran it. and I'm going to get some of the Howes lubricator and mix it in with it and see how things go. Howes says a half gallon will treat 150 gallons. That is the only thing I'm still a little confused on ( will Howes do the job) because it is an easier/cheaper route to go.

I'm not really sure about Howes, cause I've never used it, but good 'ol 2-stroke oil is a safe bet.

As stated above JP-5 (jet fuel in general) does noy have the lubricity of diesel fuel even ULSD, which is worse than the good old diesel. I wouldn't recommend it. But, it's your truck. Injectors and a pump many $$$$$.

sorta off topic...but how did everyone get the little military member thing on their profile...haha i feel left out...Back on topic, I know the jp-8 we run in our strykers probably prematurely ruins the CAT engines in them...seems like about once a month one of the trucks in my plt is going in for a new powerpack (General Dynamics just pulls entire engine and transmission package instead of fixing problems). Now I'm not saying we are particularly nice to them, but I'm thinking a lot of it is from excessive EGT from unlubricated fuel.

I've used Howes as an anitgel in the winter and had good luck with it, but I think I'd use the 2 stroke oil with the jet fuel. I think its cheaper. Keep in mind the mix ratio for Howes is probably based on ULSD type diesel, not jet fuel.

I would not use the Howe's don't think it has enough lube, stay with either 2 cycle oil or if you know of a source of cheap 30 weight Non Detergent engine oil will also work.

I know we use JP8 in all of our tactical ground support equipment (Marine Corps Aviation Squadron - tow tractors, diesel hydraulic test stands, etc.) and am pretty sure we used to put JP5 in them back in the day. I actually surprised there's any JP5 out there any more.

I really don't like the ideal of supporting your fuel habits either.
No additive supplier will address your problem, which leaves you on the hook for your indescrections. There is no documentatin that says 2 cycle oil or Howels will do the job correctlly and safely.

Problem is you need to get security clearance just to walk onto those places.
Getting a vehicle in is another game entirely.
I work at these "places".
