What does a broken flexplate sound like?

Will the truck still drive with a broken plate or no?

well mine kinda sounded like a small wire or something getting into the fan for a few seconds then it got real loud. It sounded like i stuck a piece of steel into a fast moving fan blade enough to make it start to stop or slow down, then i lost all forward moving ability. It was just like being in nuetral and reving the motor with no power to the tranny. This all took place in maybe 3-5 seconds, i shut the truck off and coasted to a stop. I tried to fire it up but it was dead. I could hear something kinda grinding or ratteling when i cranked it, so i quit trying that LOL.

And no you cant drive with it broken, well if its brfoken completely out like mine was anyway. If its just cracked then you might be able to drive it until it dies like mine did.

I wonder if this is causing my truck to have a slight knocking noise, towards the rear of the motor.....the shop checked the injectors, valve lash, metal shavings in the oil....and found nothing. The next step is to tear into the motor :banghead:

My truck starts fine, idles fine (no smoke or haze), and drives fine.....other than the knocking noise

Can the flexplate be checked and determined to be bad with everything installed in the truck?

Any idea on how yours cracked?

Did the noise happen at idle and get louder as you accelerated?

Thanks for any and all info!

the only way to really check it is to pull the trans and take a look, but you could pull the inspection cover off the bell housing and check for any metal or debris there too. If you pull the trans to look at it,then check for any rust lines on it or any fine cracks . The noise wasnt at idle, it just started while i was cruising at @ 55 mph but i did have a decent size loaded g/n on it too. The noise started and then it just got loud in about a few seconds time. I had been having a slight vibration when accelerating pretty hard but i thought it was my tires that were almost bald LOL.. Well when i installed the new flex plate , the vibration was gone. I then figured that my flexplate had been cracked for a few weeks or a month and that it was the vibration i was feeling. If you do pull the trans out to look , then you might want to atleast upgrade the plate. Also by your sig, i see you have a smarty, you may want to look into doing some trans upgrades too. JUST MY 2 CENTS I need a good swift kick in the nuts for ignoring all the advice to do the flexplate while my trans was out getting some DTT pieces and parts. haha Good luck finding the knock, i dont know how or who checked your injectors but make sure they know what they were doing. A dealer can very easily screw up an injector test, they will say that they are within specs and the truth is one of them is junk.
