So i hope to pick up my new mega 2500 laramie by the beginning of June (hope its earlier) but if it is June I'll be driving with the family down to Florida for a cruise wedding. I'm from Toronto Canada so it'll be a 2300km drive. I'm doing it in 2 days maybe 3 cause we have a week before the cruise but I'm just wondering if the long drive will be good or bad for the new motor. Its a manual tranny btw.
I've heard some say its bad don't do it, some say its really really good for the motor, and a mechanic told me (not a diesel mechanic) to drive it like I stole it, vary my speed and do lots of passing. So which is it?

the drive it like you stole it is for emissions junk. Every so often it be good for it to get on it. now everytime i dont know about that. thats just wastin more fuel.

Buy it, delete it, and "drive it like you want" not like you stole it. ;)
Im just worried about warranty. Im so tempted to do all the deletes with tune. My buddy has a 5.9 and I can't wait to delete so I can kick his a$$.

But thanks for the advice. I'll take it slow for the first 500 anyways. I want to see what mpg I'll get from her. And then I'll kick it!

Thanks again.

I just got mine and drove it 600 miles back from NC. The quick reference book that came with the truck says to drive it with a load or loaded for the first 6k, this helps properly break in the engine. We are headed to Disney with our 5th wheel in two weeks, thats as loaded as she gets... lol.

If he is cruising down the highway he will not have to drive it like he stole it or even get on it for that matter at highway speeds there is usually enough heat and load on engine to do regens

As mentioned, the engine requires no break-in, but the rear end is the issue. Since I picked mine up from the dealer and couldn't wait 500 miles to tow, I did a mixture of city and highway driving at various rpm's, and put about 175 miles on it before I hooked up the trailer for a 900 mile trip back home.

First 3 days I drove mine it was 75mph for 5 hours a day then after that it was straight to towing 10,000+ lbs for a few more hours... It won't kill it...

You can drive it like you want (even with emissions equipment, and therefore warranty, intact)

My only recommendations are to change the engine and diff oils on arrival, more just for piece of mind, and have a great trip with your new truck!!!

Thats odd i have an 11' and my manual states no towing untill 1,000 miles have been put on. I think they all need a minor break in time, i have been around alot of big truck's and when they are all new you can see the metallic glisten to every first oil change from the flakes. Most synthetic oil's (royal purple) for instance tell you not to run synthetic untill 8,000 miles, too run cheap dino oil untill then.

The engine is spun from the factory.. nothing else is. The transmission and axles have to break in. I'm sure the engine gets _SOME_ break-in during that first 1k miles. But the reason the owner's manual says that, is because of the ring & pinion.

Yea never thought of that, but you will see fine particles at first oil change, then it gets better...so that tells me its worth the chances to let it break in properaly as if it need's it, even if it doesnt

Hey thats some great advice. Thanks everyone. Can't wait to get'r on the road and open her up. So the round trip, Florida and back will be about 5000kms or approx 3600 miles. Should I get an oil change before I leave florida or just do everything diffs included when I get back? Maybe there is a coffee meet in ft lauderdale while I'm down there. See how the Americans roll!

Good luck. Those 5.9's are lighter and faster then our 6.7's :(

Hook the truck up to a trailer and tow something. That what I did, my engine rings was fully seated around the 3000-5000 mile mark. For the first three-four months my truck was towing continously. I had 30 miles on mine when did my first tow.

What ever you do not lug the engine, the stock computer is programed to run down to 1000rpm:banghead:, dumbest thing ever. Avoid wot pulls for the first 500 miles.

If all you are doing is empty hiway cruising, the engine will fully seated around 15000-20000 mile mark, meaning you'll have some blow-by/oil consumption.

Diesel are meant to tow, so do it as soon as you can. Plan on do the delete as soon as possible.

Cummins builds hi quality engines right from the factory, requiring almost no breakin period.
