My GEN light was coming on and off over the last few weeks. Now after a few minutes, it comes and and stays on. I assumed it was the alternator, so I replaced it. Well it wasn't. The GEN light is still coming on. Should have tested the old alternator first, but I didn't.

But I just tested the new one and I got 11.5 volts off the bottom post and .5 volts off the top. Doesn't seem right and it also is making noise like something may be loose inside.

I would have expected the readings for at least one of the posts to be around 14 volts or so. And I don't really understand why there are two posts. Any thoughts on the whether this alternator is bad out of the box or if these numbers are okay?

Thx for the help!

Disregard. You can't read an alternator with a multimeter. I found that my 120 amp fuse had shorted. All is fine now!

thx
