Day two of owning my new truck. When I shift to fifth it takes more force to get it into gear. Then when shifting out I can here and feel vibrations and it takes more force to get it out. While driving in fifth I noticed the shifter slide to the right while in gear on its own. I thought that was weird so while in gear I moved it side to side. I can gently move the shifter while in fifth and six into a new position about .5 inches to the side. It will stay there until I shift out of gear. Anyone deal with this before?

The G56s I've driven haven't done that but it has been a while.

My 2012 G56 had a rough/stiff 4-5 upshift for about the first thirty thousand miles.

Eventually it got smoother & easier.

They fight you a bit if it's substantially cold outside as well, mine has 800 miles and is stiff to get in 5th also and worse when cold, but its my 3rd G56 so no worries. Haven't had an issue with any. (Except clutch) but that has to be known and accounted for going into buying one.

I have a 2018 G56 truck as well. It shifted pretty stiffly for awhile. With 4200 miles on it now, it shifts pretty well now. Sometimes I feel a “grind” shifting into 5th but no problems. Basically the G56 is a medium duty truck transmission and is not a super smooth operator but is reliable and tough enough as long as the engine stays stock.

well the dealer looked at it and said I have a bad throw out bearing. I could feel that in the clutch as well. they asked me to put 1000 miles on it to get it broken in before they do any work. not sure why as a throw out bearing wont fix itself. they didn't seem to think there is anything wrong with my 5th gear. I used to sell these trucks and put 50k on my last g56. I haven't felt anything like this before. so I am content to put some miles on it before we start to dig too deep into it. I have to open up a truck to work on it. last time I had diff fluid leaking and somehow ended up with a terrible shake at highway speeds. we will see. thanks for the replys.

Yeah, a throw-out bearing won't fix itself. The stiffness between gears does subside, though. I'm just curious...if you have a bad throw out bearing and the clutch is not completely disengaging, wouldn't you experience difficult shifts in and out of all gears, not just 5th?

Make sure you get that in writing if you havnt already. Careful as some dealers will try and get you to run up a bunch of miles on something then say its a wear item and try not to cover it under warranty (probably already know this). Could be they are busy and just dont want to deal with it right now.

shifts from every other gear are normal. but when the engine is spinning high you can feel it in the pedal. full discloser I am a service writer at a ford shop and own the dodge dealer to. believe it or not we as employees are treated worse then the normal customer.

I still have a harder shift into 6th but not as bad as 4th to 5th. all the other gears are smooth. but ya 4th to 5th is very noticeable. is yours making any noise coming out of 5th going into either 4th or 6th?

Reading back over this I would agree, or its atleast worth getting it looked at (changed).

When I put my aftermarket clutch in I didnt have the clutch linkage adjusted quit right basically it was off just enough to make upshifting into 5th and initial shift into 1st difficult. I adjusted the linkage and things went back to normal. Been a while so had forgotten about that.

My shifter does the exact same after I shift into fifth gear except it pops over to the left. I was wondering if that was normal myself... It seems nobody else is having these issues, so I guess not

With my shifter, I can also gently move it about the half-inch to the right in either 5th or 6th gears just like the OP. I suspect there is just a little extra room on this side of the gate and nothing to worry about. If I move it back and forth (left to right about the half inch of travel it has) while running at speed, there are no noises or grinding feel in the shifter. If it moved on it's own, its probably just stiff from being new. My shifter has loosened up some now and feels better. I'm at 4500 miles.

After reading this thread I tried to pay attention while driving my '18 G56 3500 CCSB today. There is a difference in force for the 4th to 5th shift. It will catch you when you are trying a faster 4-5 shift. When I first got the truck my wife couldn't even pull it over and down in to reverse. It's loosened up a lot since then. I'm at 6600 miles.

Looking forward to one day tuning out the dump in power you feel between all the shifts let alone how the shifter feels.
