Blown MLS... what other options do I have?

1708 Views 19 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  trekbikedude
Have about a year on my rebuild. I run the truck pretty hard, and it just started puking coolant out of the overflow. Checked waterpump, pressure cap and thermostat. All were good. Have bubbles in radiator. I did a hot retorque after I put it together and the block and head were machined. I ran a stock mls (thicker) headgasket and I blew it. I torqued my studs down to 125. So what are my best options? It is a street truck/ daily driver... should I fire ring it? I'm wondering if the combination of high timing (30 degrees) and methanol made her pop.

Thank you for any help.

Check the head for trueness and install another MLS gasket.

If you're going to run that much timing with the meth then you need to run the 625's.
Look kids, this is what happens when you do too much meth haha.

425s are known to need several retorques to get them to hold. We have done 4-5 retorques on some trucks and they move a little on the 5th time.
I checked them twice... didn't move on the hot retorque. Figured they were good. Looks like a new mls and some 625s are in my future.
John, you should really up the nozzles to ~150's and ease up on the tuning. Then you won't have to run everything on kill with those 90's
I would like to see his injectors get flowed.

Well, it sucks, but congrats on having it hold that long. Pretty awesome truck you got there.

Funny :hehe:
If it were my truck...

Larger nozzles
Less timing
Less meth
O rings
625s

30* is pretty extreme for a daily driver. I know for a fact my truck has never seen that much timing. If you want there is a machine shop in Oxford pa that I use. I can get you his #.

What percentage w/m r you running... I use my winshield wiper resevoir.. I fill it half way with washer fluid, and the rest distilled water... Now the percentages of meth will change across the country...
meth

I run straight windshield wash.
...........
Alright guy's back to the topic.:spank:

Snow told me I would be fine to run blue windshield wash so that is what I did. Too much methanol content?

The blue should only have like 30% meth... I mix my own at 55 water and 45 meth. But I have a good source to get 5 gallons of it for $20. The timing is probably what did it. Just curious was your egts hot say 1400+?
Typically windshield washer fluid is 20% methanol which is fine. In really cold climates it can be as high as 50% which is the very upper limit of what is safe to run. The truck has made some impressive passes with the setup, but going up on injectors will allow us to lower max timing and help lower cylinder pressures. Also keep in mind everyone that 30 degrees is only at high rpm on a race only tune. Not all of John's files are running high timing. When you are pushing a setup as hard as we are pushing his it takes big duration, big timing, and big pressure to make the most power possible.

As a side note, I run 30 degrees max on my own 06 with 30+ passes on the stock headbolts running 7.50s in the 1/8th with no headgasket issues. Timing increases cylinder pressures, but there are things to consider like drive pressure that can make a head gasket let go.
Getting the head o ringed and ported. I think I will go up to 150s, that way we can pull back on timing. She's gonna rip!!!!
