Okay I am a new first time diesel owner I have a 14 2500 and tonight I spent an hour removing my cold air intake and installing a block heater cable I purchased from a local oreilly's auto parts store. The latest cable they had listed was for a 2012 2500. They said it should be the same cable no different. A temro zero start part number 3600008. Got it installed and started the truck to run to the store and the check engine light is on and the lights in the cab would dim and get a little brighter and dim again... What in the world is happening. I had not even plugged it in yet.:confused013:
Oh and the remote start would start the truck for a minute then it would shut off with a message saying it had been disabled and to start the truck with the key

Cycle your key three times within 5 sec to retrieve fault codes on your odometer(not sure if it works on 4th gens) then either post here or google whatever you get, go from there.

Your block htr has zero nada nothing that would relate anything to your cel other than when you removed your CIA and disconnected something.

The check engine light is probably on because you unplugged the sensors on the intake when you removed it.

The remote start is disabled any time the check engine light is on.

The cycling is normal I think until the truck warms up. At least both of mine do this. I think it's cycling the charge between batteries. Mine usually stops after a few minutes.

Either way, getting the light reset will cure it all.

I appreciate the info. It looks like I forgot to plug in one of the sensors I disconnected on the afe cai. I plugged it back in and went to bed,I got up this morning and no check engine light or errors. I was not a real happy camper last night. Its about 15 degrees out and it was late. I will try it again this afternoon. Again I appreciate all the info!

The cycling and dimming of the lights is from the grid heater cycling on and off. It's Totally normal. The truck Just wants a little warmer air for the motor to eat.

Check engine light from disconnecting sensors. I know on mine when I had my intake out the check engine light came on when I started it even though I plugged the sensors back in before I turned the key on. I just cleared the codes with the MM.

The lights dimming is from the grid heater cycling on and off. She requires a lot of juice. This is normal operation. Block heater is not supervised by the computer so it can't cause a CEL.

One last question? Do I need to unplug the truck before starting it?

LOL I have done this. You don't have to unplug before starting but it wouldn't be a bad idea just so that you don't forget. If you are remote starting it then don't worry about it. I got lucky once and the way I had my block heater cord end tucked in behind the tow hook and bumper, when I back out of my spot it ended up ripping the extension cord end off. It's always the beginning of the season when I start plugging my truck in that I forget about it. But now I don't have to plug in anymore with my Webasto heater.

yes & no, all it does is accelerate wear.

as the coolant passes by the hot element it causing cavitation ie small air bubbles to form on the heating element, this cavation allows very small hot spots to form that can start pitting on the heating element, it will take years for it to fail from this.

that is why they recommend to unplug it for one minute before starting so the element can cool.

And that is almost the exact amount of time it takes to unplug it, put the cap on the cord, put the extension cord away and then wait for the wait to start light!

Its almost accidentally on purpose!

Another question on block heater

I have a 2010 6.7L w/68RFE Laramie. From Southern Arizona were block heaters aren't used. it might get down to 30 or so once a great while. So mine doesn't have one. My question ? Do I just need the cable or the whole thing. I read somewhere that the heating element is already there is that true. anybody Know if the element is preinstalled ? Thanks Guys. I have always received great info here. :S:
