Thanks to domar/dieselluvr/and others on this forum i'm successfully blending wvo/#2/rug and i'm loving it:party018:
But i've been bit by the saving bug and i can't help but think of more ways to save on my fuel bill:$:
So i've been looking around the internet on how to make biodiesel, i found this site very helpful - Biodiesel: Journey to Forever
What do you guys think about blending wvo and biodiesel.... Something similar to what i'm blending now but instead of #2 use biodiesel, example 70% wvo - 20% biodiesel - 10% rug.... or something around 50% wvo - 50% biodiesel....
I can get the chemical to make biodiesel for free so all i'll be paying for is the methanol and depending on if i do methanol recovery i figure i can make fuel for 0.25-0.65 gallon:stirpot:
(these figures do no include electricity/time/ect.)

Your initial cost to make biodiesel is usually your biggest expense. Methanol is what makes the bulk of biodiesels per gallon cost. Lye is insignificant. Yes you can blend biodiesel and WVO but make absolute sure that it's done right and dried properly otherwise you can cause some of your WVO to turn into glycerine. And that's bad. Very bad. It takes very little glycerine to clog a fuel filter.

thanks. after researching i realize how important it is to make sure the biodiesel is a fine product before running it.
my plan is to start with a simple bucket processor like this Making Biodiesel - Homemade Biodiesel - Make Your Own Biodiesel
i have a few questions with the process of blending it with my wvo.
-should i use my centrifuge to blend/polish the processed biodiesel with my already centrifuged clean wvo?
-can i process the biodiesel, then add it to "dirty wvo" in the centrifuge, then begin the centrifuge to clean the wvo while the biodiesel is blended with it?
-what about processing the biodiesel, washing it, but not drying it, then add it to my "dirty wvo" like above and heating to 160 while centrifuging to "flash boil" the water in the bio and wvo?

I always blend before centrifuge. The thinner the liquid the better the centrifuge works.

should have also said the WVO that i add to dino in the centrifuge barrel has been settled and filtered at 100 micron. The centrifuge will then get the smaller particals and de-water the blend. Make sure your barrel is heated to 160F when centrifuging. I just turn on both the heater and the pump at the same time and run for 12 hours min. the barrel doesn't take that long to heat up. If you heated the barrel before turning on the pump you could lower the time by a couple of hours but it is a hassle to have to tend to it twice so that is why I turn both on at the same time.

When centrifuging, using one of these looks like it would have it's advantages such as only heating the amount of oil that's in the cannister instead of a complete drum, yes???? no?????.
looks like it would be very simple to build also, using a length of pipe, a water tank heater, & a thermostat to control the heat

do this pump HEAT at the same time it is pumping? If so that would be cool!

looks like it is a good idea but when you do the math it doesn't stack up. This thing is 1000W the heater on my barrel is 1200W. So not much difference in power draw. The cost of this unit is quite a bit more than a barrel heater. It would take a long time to get your money back.

Ya, I don't think it would be of any advantage to someone like yourself who already has their system pretty much scienced. I fiqure it may be a good way of going for someone who is just starting to get their processor up & running. i'm pretty sure you could build one with a hot water heater element, a thermostat to regulate it, & mount it in a piece of pipe, all from Home Depot for cheaper than this unit sells for.:confused013::confused013: Just a thought

also if you had a large system that held a large tank full of WVO instead of a 55 gallon drum it would give you a cost savings.

Bio vs WVO

I'm probably :bdh: here but I cant find much in comparison.

Ok guys I'm looking into one of these alternative fuels. I'm leaning towards BIO because it seems like there are quite a few mods that need to be done to the truck and it seems like it would be easier to procure stuffs for bio vs wvo.

if your talking about your 02 then bio would be safest. otherwise sell it and buy a 12v, blending is so easy :)

There are several ways to burn WVO, but the VP44 pump in your 02 limits your options. Like lco stated, bio may be your best option.
